Do you keep the lights on or off when you're on the computer at night?

I prefer to keep the lights off, but have been advised not to do that anymore, because I had 4 days of headaches this week (I never get headaches normally).
I noticed I can't read a book just by lamplight anymore, I have to have the main light (flourescent) on.

That thing about how it's bad to watch TV in the dark - I thought that has been debunked? And supposedly CRT TVs, let alone computer LCD screens, don't give off that much radiation anyway?

I'm looking for a reason other than that it's sciforums that gave me the headache...

I usually end up switching the lights on when I realise I'm having to guess which key I'm pressing (never having learned how to touch type) or hunt blindly for my ever-present mug of coffee.

It's probably Sci that's doing it.

Balanced room lighting is better for you, as is limiting the amount of time you spend in front of a screen.

However, ignoring such advice will eventually convince you of its importance anyways. The headaches are likely sort - of a warning that you may be pushing it a tad.

I use a small desk top lamp that has a floresent bulb in it and its lasted over 8 years already. Very small and easy to adjust.

I always have the full room lighting on. Turning off the ambient lighting reduces the total illumination in the room and my pupils enlarge to compensate. Then the computer screen becomes blindingly bright.

I often turn them off to watch TV, but I don't sit so close to the TV.

My lamp is almost exactly like Cosmic's but...

    white light or yellow light?

Someone told me white lamplight will cause less eyestrain than yellow.
But I like the atmosphere created by yellow lamplight...

However I keep the room lights on now because another week of bad headaches and I could get fired.

Had an eye test a while back and asked this very same question, was told that it doesn't damage your eyes but just simply puts more pressure on them - which can lead to tiredness and headaches.

when "working" with the computer i have a shaded 100 watt bulb on my desk lit.
i turn the light out only when i am playing my favorite game.
get your eyesight checked, headaches are a symptom of faulty sight.

I turn the brightness on my laptop to the lowest setting when in a dark room.

    This.

I have light on. I also use a free program called FLUX which alters the screen colours depending on whether its daylight or dark outside. it goes from 3400k halogen to 6000k daylight. Google it.
