Just a straight-forward question. Can you find out if a certain person has put you on their ignore list? As in, could you PM a mod, or the admin? Or is that out of the question, or otherwise not possible?

No, it's not possible. However, you can tell you're being ignored if the person never responds to any of your posts.

hmm...why did anyone approve something as ignore? This violates human rights of being heard. But then some dont think so...

For everyone's information, I believe I've discovered another way of telling. Last night, I sent a PM to a person who I half-suspected had me on their ignore list, and who I was reasonably certain was offline. I looked in my sent box immediately after it was sent, and it indicated that the PM was read. Then I checked their profile, and it showed no activity since a few hours previous and explicitly said they were offline.

At any rate, thanks for clearing that up.

I'm not aware of a right among the civilian population – at least in the US – to be heard; in fact, I think there is a right among the population not to hear. Not that that has much bearing on SciForums.

Athelwulf, those that do not reply to this thread are obviously ignoring you.

I do not see everyone having the right to be heard. The right to choose what one wants to hear is the only one I can agree to.

This forum doesn't tell you when your pm's have been read or not.
Unless your account is somehow special, that is.
I believe that Mod's can tell if their pm's have been read or not. But not casual members.
At least mine doesn't work that way. Never has.

on my pm page there are icons for:
    unread message
    read message
    replied-to message
    forwarded message

i think that a 'read' message is one that was received in the receivers in box
in short it was 'delivered' not neccessarily read

Maybe it means read by yourself?

Back in 1995 at 10/11 or something like that, I used to lurk around BBSs (Ahh the memories... windows 3.1.. DOS... Terminal..) and I recall many of them would tell you if your "e-mails" from user to user would send you a notification that your message was read. Man, I forget what that feature was called... I think "return receipt."

There is the option for the different icon for read and not read, but I've never seen the unread icon. Ever.
The option is turned off for casual posters. Only mods get the notification.

Several forums offer this service. At the scienceforum, they even let you edit your pm until it's been read.

I didn't open the PM itself. Only the sent box. And I've usually seen an unread PM in there after I've sent a PM in other cases.

Actually, I think it's when the recipient opens it, thereby reading it.

Poor guy. From what I've observed in the past, I guess my account is special.

I think it is a neat service, but it makes people like keep checking to see when a message was read... then I wonder for days "why didn't they reply?" At least with it turned off my mind is at peace

    Hmm.
    Must be.
Because I stand by the fact that the unread icon is unutilized. I've got a sent pm right now that I know has not been read, yet the icon says it has.
I've only seen blue icons ever in the sent box.

    Maybe you're delusional?

I just tested the process. If a user has you on ignore and you send a PM, it never gets delivered and you never know if it does or doesn't. The user that has you on his/her ignore list never gets the PM. Ever.

Any message you send, regardless of whether you are on "ignore" or not shows up as "read" in your sent folder. Messages from users you've chosen to ignore that are still in your inbox will reflect "[user] is on your ignore list."

There is no apparent way to determine whether or not you have been placed on ignore beyond the obvious: observe whether or not the other user ever bothers to reply/respond to you again.

I still maintain that there should be a feature that gives a negative or postive value next to the member's avatar that reflects the ratio of "buddy list" to "ignore list" entries. Otherwise, the so-called "buddy list" is a wasted feature.

    okay lets do a test
i have pm notification enabled, that means when i get a pm i am notified when i get it or when i log on if i am off line.
it tells me who sent it
so athelwulf send me a pm, i will get the notification.
since this is a test i will not read the pm.
and to let you know i got it i will send you a pm telling you.

I just did the test. But in true peer-reviewed style, I look forward to your results confirming my own. At least we know leopold99 doesn't have a sock puppet, or he wouldn't have asked someone else to help

    invert_nexus,

I'm pretty sure I've seen unread messages in my sent box.

    SkinWalker,

I knew they never get the PMs. I just never really knew whether or not SF tells you it's read when they're ignoring you.

I could've sworn that I've seen unread PMs in my sent box. I guess I have to go test to make sure.

    I'll keep that in mind.

    leopold99,

Sorry, I only just now saw this. I'll send the PM right now.

Edit: I just sent it. I immediately looked in my sent box, and it indicated that it was read. I really could've sworn I've seen my sent PMs unread before. In fact, I remember that particular PM where I saw it too.

Why can't I add myself to my own ignore list?

    for what reason?
the purpose of the ignore function is to hide posts
you can see your post as you type it.
