I frequently feed a stray cat; So i was reading on some of the things and found out that Animal control will ultimately euthanize a cat once they have it!

So what is it? concentration camps for animals? isn't that barbaric? I feel sorry that i cannot take care of this cat, because i am busy with my work schedule and i cannot afford to have any pets since i am out for most of the day.

Death penalty is one thing, in that case, you have a criminal who has committed an act of violence which is heinous in the eyes of the society the person lives in (I am not debating death penalty ethics as it has caveats in itself); but in this case, the only crime that was committed was by th owner of the pet who left it to die somewhere ....

How can we allow this to happen?

    Any thoughts??

is euthanization that bad for a cat? do they enjoy long and fulfilling lives more than abruptly ended ones? is the predicament of a dead cat better than that of a stray?

Have you spent any time trying to find this stray (which you admit you cannot commit to) a home? And if so, you have not succeeded so you have a very good idea of how difficult it is to place an unwanted animal. And if you havent even tried, well.... whats stopping you?

And while you may feel your doing this cat some kind of favor by prolonging its life, you have not reduced the risk the animal faces each day dodging traffic, other cats/animals, and the generally cruel fate that awaits this animal, whos life expectancy is greatly reduced even with the food you offer. When it finally disappears, and it will, will you convince yourself that it finally found a home and lived happily ever after or will you wonder if its lying in pain somewhere due to an untreated health condition, just too sick to drag itself to your stoop? Or maybe you will see it dead alongside the road and feel a bit of grief. Will you then wonder if it would have been better if you had taken it to a shelter and at least give it an attempt to place it in a home? Will you stop your car and even move its little furry body off to the side of the road?

Ah yes. Death penalty, concentration camps, barbaric... yet you will only toss some food to the lepers (unwanted strays) because you dont actually want to treat them yourself.

People should be very aware that when they turn an animal loose, the penalty is death, whether it be via roadside, disease/health, or starvation. Oh, I could never kill my pet... People kill their pets each time they abandon them to the elements. And its not nearly as dainty a death via injection at a vets office/shelter.

Why not get a small cat collar and put it on the cat. That way the animal control officer won't think its a stray will they?

You could either spay or neuter the cat yourself to help control the animal from breeding more problems. Many communities have cheap animal hospitals that charge little to have that done.

I think they should be euthanized and then fed to lions/tigers/and alligators in zoos. That way some good comes from their deaths. Another animal survives.

Where I worked they found cremating the animals after they were euthanized was more efficiant than having to take their bodies over to the nearest zoo, which was over 200 miles away!

Ashes have nothing in them to furnish nourishment, everything is burned out of the animal leaving only ashes.

    Milkweed,

well said, I agree with most of your points, But I am still not ready to accept your argument as a justification for a wrong act; My mistake is that I am allowing this happen, I will take the blame for it, or I will admit that someone else abandoned this Animal has to take blame for it. But thats where it stops. If this cat or any animal dies a natural or accidental death. That is a death which i would consider natural or un-avoidable rather, but euthanization is plain old barbaric, Wont you agree?

    Cosmictraveller,
about the idea of a Cat collar, muhahahahah that is a good thought =))

Wow, Orleander, your crackin me up.

But I also feed a stray cat, about once a week. I give him some of that good tuna, thats what cats like. I figure this guy is actually living the high life of most cats, one with nature, fend for himself, all that stuff. How can you say those "domesticated" animals really have a life? If they don't have to fight to survive (at least for animals) I think they are not quite alive.
I'm not saying I want him to die, I want him to LIVE.

I think you should be euthanized and fed to zoo animals. That way at least one mega-consumer is out of the way, the zoo-animals can acquire a taste for human flesh, and last be not least [you can fill this one in yourself].

Do as Cosmic said, put a collar on it so they won't think it's a stray.

No I would not agree that euthanization is plain old barbaric. If there were homes for these animals, there would be no shelters resorting to putting animals down. You yourself wont commit to being a pet owner, yet post this protest. You havent an answer for the problem of strays. Have you taken your particular stray in for the minimal vet care? Do you have any idea of how old the cat is? Do you even know if the animal is carrying worms (and potentially infecting children with this parasite). Distemper? Rabies? Feline Leukemia? Did you bother to spay/neuter your favorite stray as a minimal attempt to prevent further distress?

And there is nothing natural about a cat dying alongside a highway, street, etc. There is no accidental death of a stray cat. This is similar to claiming the accidental death of a stray labrador retriever.

It means someone abandoned an animal to the elements without further thought on its future. And while you think frequently tossing food to this stray is ethical, what happens when you move? Who feeds the cat then and who is now abandoning an animal?
