Too long. Why keep a record of people who were banned years ago ? Keep them on for 6 months, and then ditch the names.
Fair enough. It just gives the false impression that there are a lot of banned people. It's actually fairly difficult for a bone fide member to get permabanned. A lot of these are just sock puppets. And some are ancient. Why not have an occasional clear out? It's not really important for me, just a bit of feedback.
Only thing I dislike about the ban list is that it's not all in alphabetical order. All things must be properly indexed!
That makes it even more useless, as I think you are suggesting. It's like someone's stamp collection of bannings. As I say, it's no big deal, but in a situation where people are paranoid of big brother, this huge list of people, or spam bots, sent to Siberia, is misleading and unhelpful. A few people banned for a few days, and a few severe trouble makers (or nutcases, such as the one who threatened to cut me up into little pieces) permabanned, is the reality.
It would all be very well to just delete spam bots from the list, however if they aren't recorded in the system they would just return and re-attempt. Spam bots consume bandwidth and bandwidth of course costs money when used to the extreme. Admittedly it wouldn't take much to hide the group from the Banlist output just a slight change to the SQL query. However it would probably need to be rehacked anyway, since everytime someone loads it I'm guessing that's pulling directly from the DB and that causes load, so a Cache hack is in order.
They were breaking forum rules by using it before the internet was invented... That is a banable offence.
01-01-70 is the Default entry for the database. If a value isn't plugged into it it goes with the Default. It should be remedied in the future with an up and coming extension to the initial plugin which will hopefully act a bit more graceful.

Some of the moderators around here have been very annoying and jump on people with little provocation. That's what gives here. Others abuse their power to get rid of certain opinions.
