I'm looking for a song. Heard it once about 10years ago... I think the song is Egyptian and it's sung by a female. It's very upbeat and goes 'willy willy.... willy willy, willy willy halaaaaaaaaaa with lots of female arabic tongue rolling sounds. Those are the only clues I can provide, unfortunately. -thanks
I know you said that those are the "only clues," but can you possibly place the era of the piece? Egyptian and female: first person who comes to my mind is, of course, Oum Khoultoum; but that ("willy willy.... willy willy, willy willy halaaaaaaaaaa") sure as hell doesn't sound like Khoultoum.
Waleeeeeih- Shu Biddak? Wuleeeeeah? Ha'la? Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image! If it had been Fairouz ya9neh, I might have recognized it. Try surfing around Rotana a while and you might happen on it. Unfortunately, the first "wave" of Arab-pop is obliterating the era you're interested in, in most current promotion and programming. Listen to internet radio streams from the mideast, and rays of bright sunlight will peek out occasionally (do I sound musically disgruntled?). That may be your best bet, if nobody here recognizes it. Maybe if you will record something and post a link so we can hear you (!) When I try to replay what I listened to, or was captivated by in Beirut in the 80s (filtering out the normal world-pop and world-retro music background that everyone hears everywhere) the most amazing and beautiful things I had ever heard keep getting harder for me to find- just like some states of mind when you've lived places. Part of getting out of touch on many levels. If you rewind just a few years, Arab kids and their parents adored the same music. Consequently they shared a lot of mutual fun and understanding. If you have ever been so lucky as to live in such a place for one hour, cherish it forever along with the music. Sometimes, I'm afraid something's dying. :bawl:
this is the only song I know that might be considered Arab pop, but I don't think it is. Please Register or Log in to view the hidden image!

hey, its about the only exposure to middle eastern music most Americans have had. If it has Allah in it, it must be arabic. sad but true
I can't hear or read you. I have torn off my ears and gouged out my eyes. I can still post though. Shukran, Mavis Beacon. I'll try to stay on topic.
Is it Noor Shimal's weli weli? http://www.maqam.com/store/p/979-Where-Africa-Meets-the-Orient.html#Samples Click on "Preview" to hear a sample/
Gouging out the eyes was a mistake. I bet Sam's posting something good right about now, like a light through the storm.
