Why is Germany so Cheap?

Canada overcharges its citizens with tons of taxes and its twice more expensive there than in USA. As far as Germany goes...it is indeed overcrowded there and not really safe, but their economy is blooming. If USA wasnt on the list, Germany would be.

Here's a comparison between a typical Canadian city like Montreal and typical American city like Phoenix.
Phoenix is a little cheaper than Boston...esp if you include rent, but isnt significantly less than Montreal overall.

Because the price of fuel affects the price of everything else you would at least expect German food items to be far more expensive than Canada...but its exactly the opposite???

Canada is an oil producing nation with an excess of farmland.

Germany produces no oil and farmland is very expensive.

you seem to undermine the role of technology and industrial production in economies of the two countries.

Citizens pay a lot for a license to drive. And if they hit a tree. The tree has value. And they pay for the tree and its replaced. Food cost when I was there was a significant amount. And taxis are not cheap, and parking imo was lousy. To get a speeding ticket you mostly are photographed. And those tickets are not cheap either. IMO rent may be cheap in some areas, but you pay more in other areas.

Oh and gas is bought by the liter not the gallon there. It costs more by the liter than it does here by the gallon.

Canada is a resource producer and exporter...oil, minerals, fertilizer, hydro-electric power, grain and lumber.

Germany is an industrial producer and exporter...mostly machinery and vehicles.

Switzerland is also a highly industrial economy and yet the prices are FAR higher.

In this video, we can see that german industrial training starts young, around about age 15.
In North America by contrast, young people get wall to wall university degrees, and end up bartending, with 30 thousand dollars in student loans.

They also have pay toilets...a lady stands outside the public toilet and collects your money simply for the privilege of taking a piss.

They are however, fastidiously clean toilets!

I known of just a couple of those "ladys". It felt weird to me at the time. I spent 2 years straight over there.

One of the reasons why Germany is such a cheap place to live compared to other countries is the effect of absorbing of East Germany, the fact is that whilst the former West Germans were relatively well off many from the East certainly weren't. The years of communism had seriously taken the toll. It's now taken over 20 years trying to bring the East up to the same level and stardards of the West and still an on going process. I used to live in Berlin (West Berlin Charlottenburg) and for many years it was by far one the cheapest West European catipal cities to live in. Even today as we are starting to see the beginnings of a property boom in Berlin it remains really a very cheap place to live, not at all what you would expect from a major capital city in one of the world's richest countries. Also it has an amazingly efficient and effective transport system, for a €6.30 ticket you can use the U-bahn, S-bahn and buses all day long. I'd like to see someone do that in london. Also whilst appartment prices are rising rapidly if you wish to buy one, rents are still reasonably affordable, food prices are pretty much the same as in other German cities and even restaurants are cheap, for about €30 - €40 you can have a really nice meal with wine in a quality restaurant, again you'd be hard pressed to do the same for 5 or 6 times that in London or Paris.

Yes it's quite normal to pay to use the toliets in Germany, but this is also quite common across Europe, and indeed would also be the same in England had it not been for a decree by Queen Victoria in the 19th century. But this charge does help to pay for toliet attendants to ensure the toliets are not abused, you'll rarely see bad toliets in Germany, they do maintain standards, as anyone who's ever been to France and presented with a hole in the floor might appreciate.
The idea of standards in general though goes way beyond the toilets, as Germany maintains a most orderly society with cleanliness, hygiene and efficency taken very seriously. Of all the mainland European nations Germany shares the most cultural similarities with the US and UK and yes contrary to popular belief the Germans do have a strong sense of humour.

Well I wouldn't put it quite that way, when you think the former West Germans have had to pay for over 2 decades for the rebuilding of the former East Germany, with the East Germans themselves having very little money, then the burden upon all of Germany to prop up the Euro and contribute to bail out funds for failing EU economies such as Portugal, Ireland and Greece.
It may seem things are cheap, and so they are, but equally so is that taxes are high. Ultimately they have a secure strong economy, cheap living costs, the beginnings of a property boom, a big influx of money, huge exports and a lot of responsibility to the financial stability of several other countries. So cheap yes, but cheap is not the whole story.

I believe Germany is cheep because people are frugal . that brings the picture to supply and demand . Germans normally are nor wasteful as American or Canadian . And so to maintain cost low
you spend less then there is an exes in supply and so the prices stay low.

You raise an excellent point Arauca. Germans do slice their rye bread a lot thinner...on the other hand, they often drink beer for breakfast!

Generally, they live less wasteful lives...they drive less, have fewer single family homes which are extremely wasteful, and dont waste as many resources on spectator sports and idiotic media entertainment.
