Why do Jews make such good scapegoats?

The title of this thread was actually going to be "scapegoats." But then I realized no one would read it. "Sex with (scape)goats" seemed too crass, so I though bringing up the good 'ole Jews would get your attention.

Though this thread isn't meant to be about Jews, per se. It's more about different societies' scapegoats, why they needed them, what role they played, why, etc. A scapegoat being someone society blames for its ills, such as Jews or people who aren't white.

So, we're all fairly familiar with the European scapegoats, but what of the scapegoats of pre-industrial China, or scapegoats in the New World?
 
It was actually the ancient Hebrews who invented the scapegoat. On Yom Kippur, the Jewish day of atonement, the high priest would confess the sins of the people over the head of a goat, who was then allowed to escape into the wilderness - taking the sins with him.

The Christians came along and abstrated the principle by creating a myth of atonement embodied by the crucifiction of Jesus.

no Jews didn't invent thepsychological concept of scapegoating ---patriarchy/male supremacy did/does. and women came well before Jews as scapegoats----commensurate with women are homosexuals and people with darker skin and ESPECIALLY people/originally women!! who are believes to be connected with Earth mysteries-----this is ORIGIN

we are talkin a major bodymind/organism assault in our species history by the patrirchal mindset which prohibits sacramental communal ecstasy.
the sacrament is the 'pharmakon and the 'pharmakos' is the abstract substitute (Shamanism and te Drug Propaganda, Dan Russell)--in myth 'Judas', 'Jesus' etc etc---the 'scapegoat'. WHENthe communal pharmakon is forbidden, made taboo, and then even forgotten from memory, is when 'scapegoats' come to be experinced as the anwer to the rejuvination for A group emotion-----thus we get the SLAVE, the JUDAS, the WITCH, the NIGGER, the WOMAN, the HOMOSEXUAL, the 'OTHER' becomes the one/andor group to be ejected, exiled, terminated

First. I gave Jews as an example of a societal scapegoat.
Second. Carcano presented an etymology of the word scapegoat, literally a goat that is allowed to escape, carrying the blames of a community.

Third. Scapegoatism is a human phenomena, not one of your paranoid conspiracy fantasies.

Fourth. This thread is about scapegoating, not about how you destroyed your brain with hallucinogenics or why patriarchy (which you scapegoat for just about everything) is the root of scapegoating.

I always wondered why so many people hated the Jews as a child. My father told me it was because they're arrogant (the whole "chosen people of God" thing)...

There must be a better explanation. A nice long historical one with societal factors, religous differences etc. I know we're thinking scapegoats in general, but the Jews are a particularly fascinating example. Anyone care to do one of those terrific super-informative very long posts that I can read while sipping my coffee and not working?

Could we conceivably design a scapegoat on which to blame the tension this thread caused? (testosterone, anyone?)

Or the perception of arrogance...I think it may have more to do with their higher average intelligence (Eastern european Jews have the highest average IQ in the world, followed by Orientals). Most Jews don't take Judaism very seriously.

Peoples with higher intelligence tend to gravitate towards professions in which power is attained, and jealousy attracted.
 
Like Lou says, they're a race of nerds. They're different. They're smart. Outcasts. Or at the very least are perceived as such. Thus, they are subject to being bullied.
 
We hate Jews because they are different. Its as simple as that and perfectly normal. We are hardwired to seek similarity. When a bunch of foreigners insist on keeping to themselves and not adopting the ways of the nation gracious enough to be burdened with them, its only natural they will incur the wrath of the masses. Somebody has to be the target of hate and why not the money hording elitist always complaing Jews who are so stupid they don't even have a homeland.

I do not and will never recognise Israel as a nation. It is part of Palestine.
 
Well now that they realize you don't recognize them I'm sure they'll be packing thier bags directly.

But why are they so different?

Afterall, arent they just another religious group of totally normal people? I mean they are just people who believe in something different to christianity, it doesnt mean they are any different in everyday life.

If that was the case then surely christians, muslims etc etc would be as 'different' as jews?

i dont quite understand to be honest, care to explain?

Bush has been scapegoated. Worse, he has not committed direct theft, murder and intentional cultural destruction unlike historical "scapegoats".

Projection is one of the defense mechanisms identified by Freud and still acknowledged today. According to Freud, projection is when someone is threatened by or afraid of their own impulses so they attribute these impulses to someone else.
