These guys are called "family annihilators". Their acts can be triggered by business failings, debt, domestic unrest, threat of separation/divorce, suspicion that a spouse wronged them, etc. Undiagnosed depression and mental illnesses may be contributing factors when concerning particularly baffling cases. For the case I am talking about, both couples have good job and the wife just got a promotion. They do not have financial problem. The news never explain the intention of homicide.
Often it is simply a moment of rage. Without a gun, that turns into a fight, perhaps someone gets hit, and then it's off to the marriage counselor or even police. With a gun, that turns into a dead family.
