wheeling

Everything in the universe spins, rotates, revolves, how does that relate to the "wheels with wheels " of the chariot in Ezekiel 1? The 4 faced cherubs do not seem to have to turn their heads!

Ezekiel 1 doesn't mention the universe spinning, rotating or revolving, does it? Reading Ezekial 1 also makes me think that the prophet might have been affected by some kind of drug when he wrote that.

No doubt chemicals like alcohol (Spirits) can fuel the imagination. but I was looking at this piece of artwork, scripture more at face value, the symbolism. The serene upper level the divine, possible creator, and the turmoil below, rotating in ever which way, , not for propulsion though because the chariot also levitates.

Seems to be an ancient anticipation of furniture roller ball casters. IMAGE: https://dia.pitts.emory.edu/image_details.cfm?ID=13029
  • New International Version: "As I looked at the living creatures, I saw a wheel on the ground beside each creature with its four faces. This was the appearance and structure of the wheels: They sparkled like topaz, and all four looked alike. Each appeared to be made like a wheel intersecting a wheel. As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the creatures faced; the wheels did not change direction as the creatures went. Their rims were high and awesome, and all four rims were full of eyes all around."

The text seems to rule out that interpretation. The whole affair is a levitating device. The wheels seem to be more for observation, perhaps personal contact. full of eyes, not your sturdiest tire material, (the eye in some scripture is a symbol of extreme sensitivity to touch). Furniture casters are swivelers. Ezekiel was mum about the wheels central axis, perhaps he did not think they needed them. Loose rollers would not have worked either, falling off the small base soon . Perhaps Isaac Newton gave this some serious thought, as he did (secretly) on other bible subjects.

cc thank you for posting the artwork, the many pre- 1400 AD impressions about that "vision" I never thought of the thing as a highchair.
The Flat earth belief seems to come with those wheels, the rims locked in the 2 dimensional movement. Requiring Zig - zagging to your destination, always lined up with the 4 corners of the world. further:
merging rims are mechanically impossible.
