What makes a religion acceptable?

There are many religions out there, some acceptable and some not. In particular there is a branch or sect of Islam that believes terrorism is a way to heaven.

So my question to you is, what makes a religion acceptable in modern society?

I would start with banning violence...except in the immediate threat of death.
This self defense exemption has been stretched to the breaking point on many occasions by main stream religions. So what makes a religion acceptable?

Acceptable to Americans you mean? Because obviously Islam is accepted in its respected part of the world.

Perhaps you have not been to The United States. There are many Muslims in The United States.

And we coexist peacfully...who would have thought? There are over a million Muslims in the US and growing. The Muslim community in the US is one of the fastest growing communities in the US. Not bad for a country that has supposedly declared war on Islam. If the US is so antimuslim, why are so many Muslims choosing to emmigrate to the US?

In my opinion a religion is acceptable if it:
- doesn't break or challenge the law
- doesn't cause unnecessary friction between people

That second one is a difficult one of course.. and thus a regular subject of debate.

A number of folks seem to think they have the absolute truth when it comes to God. Tolerance goes a long way as a requirement for religion in my book.

Which sect or branch is this? Can you provide some sources from the Quran and Hadith to back up your view?

Furthermore, what differentiates legitimate war from terrorism in your definition of the word you used in the post above.

There is a lot of misinformation about Islam, we should back up with evidence when such claims are made.

In the US, no religion is considered unacceptable, only those acts that are against the law are not accepted (and even then, they have to catch you doing it).

They ALL are full of nonsense and NONE of them are any good.

that's a bit much, they do run some charities, they gave us xmas and easter. it might be some people's only exposure to decent values. the amount you screw up doesn't erase the good you do.

Tolerable is usually applied to other people's beliefs. Which may or may not be acceptable.
