On topic...
From what I understand Stanley Kubrick in his 2001:A Space Odyssey got space-view shots of the Earth and Europa (was it?) uncannily correct although there were no space-view shots of those places available at the time. We are so used to seeing such shots now that we often miss the sheer prophecy of Kubrick's work. However, as admirable as his achievement is, I don't think it was any thing more than an intelligent estimation. Within just a few years, months even, such views of Earth would be made widely available. It's sort of like the year before the Wright Brothers took off, no one much would be astonished that heavier-than-air flight would soon be achieved. Even if they couldn't invent the airplane themselves, they could kind of see it coming just around the corner.
The government would not need Kubrick to be any part of it. From a technological standpoint, the filming could have been done by numerous people, even at the time and especially those working for a govt. agency.
As for 2001, it was OK. It is not my favorite of his, maybe 3rd.
From memory the images you are referring to are a little cloudy. I would be willing to bet other depictions\artistic renderings existed at the time that he may have seen, although cant say for sure since it was a little before my time.
