OMG I’m so old.

It’s 50 years to the day since Viking 1 landed on Mars. On 20 July 1976,

I remember having to wait for that first scanning picture (below) of the surface to fully form, and thinking I would like a copy of that.
Back then you had to wait for the next day’s newspaper to ‘get’ a copy.

No, it was not. The Viking craft had arrived at Mars about month before the landing, and spent that time taking photos in part to choose a landing site. So the actual date of the landing was deliberate choice.
