Use of AI on sciforums. Policy discussion

Let's send her to physicsforums! See how long she lasts before getting kicked out. :D
That's mean, posting in a language other than English is prohibited for a start, so she would not get out of the blocks.
Also, comparing the mods to James say? Times the number of him by ten, with at least three active at any one time, decrease his patience by 80% and give him about twice as many rules to follow, to the letter.
I once posted some information on hazardous chemicals as that is part of my job, I forgot to put a citation. It's fine though right? I mean I had been on the site for five years by that time, everyone knows me?
No, not ok. Mods pounced as did a member I think, I found my citation and posted quick smart!

There's this place, but you have to log in now to see any of the threads. They were trying to stop spiders, bots, and scrapers.

Olga would probably enjoy Magical Realist, among others there.

Disclaimer: no dicks were salted, in the making of this post.

Yes, that place is probably about right for her. Plenty of crank-on-crank action.

Please do not insult other members.

Moderator note: parmalee has been warned for insulting another member (again).
(From here.)

Because I referred to a member here, who had insulted me just prior and has persistently harassed me for several months now (owing to his own poor reading comprehension skills), as "Slow Donny".

Just prior this, James posts this--to me:

I see. So, despite your comment about "shits and giggles", it turns out that you are, in fact, an imbecile. I will keep that in mind in any future interactions with you.
( From here and emphasis added.)

And then he just closes the thread. No opportunity to respond to that attack.

And all that because he pathetically could not own up to simply having misread a passage, and had to argue with--and attack--posters here, for what--5 or 6 pages? over this rather ridiculous misreading. (I mean, why on earth would I claim that "Tiassa does not claim that JKR is transphobic"?)

I'm sorry, I'm just missing the quality of "patience" which you allege and attribute here, not to mention civility, intelligence, and basic reading comprehension--qualities which I think ought to be basic pre-requisites for moderators here, and anywhere else really.

The guy is a troll--an abusive, paranoid, pathologically dishonest, and possibly functionally-illiterate troll, at that.

I am aware of your interactions, disagreements and general on going thing with him but this thread is not about that.
There are long enough posts elsewhere on that.

Fair enough. I'm just pointing out that patience is not an attribute of the moderation here--or rather, it's a very selective sort of patience, which is only accorded some.

That said, I'm still not quite understanding why Olga can't simply translate her text prior to posting. She's obviously having to translate our responses--meaning she has the capability to do such--so why not just do the same both ways?

THAT, is the million dollar question.
Also, Chrome seems to offer translations right up front for pages which are predominantly in non-English. Seems like there ought to be a setting which would offer the same for pages which feature only partially non-English text--anyone know if there is such a setting?

I think we tried all those solutions. I think her phone is from the 90's.

The curiosity here is that "Richard Townsend" posted here for a short while back in 2017 (I think it was - of course I now can't search under his name any more), before AI was available. Presumably that was the real person. One wonders what motivated him to send us a chatbot troll, 9 years later.

Anyway, it needed banning and has been banned, so sciforums policy seems to be evolving to meet the challenge.:)

The key seems to be the dishonesty involved in having someone pretend that a chatbot is actually them.
One of his posts.

Click the triple dots, top right. On the drop-down there will be an option, Translate. It will translate any parts of the page in non English to English. Including people's names. Sarkus for example becomes Red, because sarkus means red in Latvian. Wegs becomes Away (wegs = away, in German) I have wondered what would happen if I posted under Taureau Merde.

Right. I forgot about that one--and it's associated shortcomings. I figure at some point AI will work out these quirks, for instance, only translate when there's a bunch of consecutive non-English terms (fuckin genius! I oughtta be working for Google.).

Actually though, if you just highlight a portion of the Russian text, translate it, then click on translate full page, it will then translate only the Russian text. But I shouldn't have to do all that work.

I love that Inspector Clouseau can translate as "Inspector Nail Bucket." I wonder if Blake Edwards did that on purpose. Or maybe he just liked it for clou sounding like clue.
I think my version of Chrome browser recognizes proper names in a sentence and leaves them alone.

I hate to use the phrase, "common sense", because it's largely meaningless--

with no disrespect intended towards Thomas Paine. Had this country followed Paine rather than the slave-owing, rapist Jefferson, this country would likely be in a better place right now. Somewhat OT though, I guess.

--and really doesn't convey much of anything, except to rightwing fascists, apparently.

Butttt...something is sorely lacking with respect to how these softtwares "choose" to parse certain matters. That said, I think Derrida could have gotten some mileage out of these weird mala...whatever--isms they're prone to.

Moderator note: parmalee has been warned (again!) for insulting another member.

Due to accumulated warning points, he will be taking a short break from sciforums.

Apart from the insults, parmalee's post was inappropriate because it was completely off-topic for the current thread. Feedback regarding moderation matters can be posted in the Site Feedback subforum. I can also be contacted directly by private messaging.
