Not something I do often but when I tried recently I kept getting a, "file too large" pop up.
I cropped it and it was less than a MB.

Any ideas?

Since I use an installed image optimization app to lower the file size of images, I don't really have any experience with free online tools (which one is best or safe).

I get this when I screen cap something and paste it directly in. If I paste it into Phtooshop first, then copy it from there, that seems to do the trick.

Bottom line seems to be that an image app or editing tool needs to mediate or intervene in the process for some reason (perhaps irrelevant of being deliberately used to decrease the file size).

Was it a jpeg? If not, did you try converting it to jpeg?

Yah, goodness knows, since it's Sciforums, only that format might be accepted (excluding gifs for avatars).

Test (failed)

Yep, it's file size and format. I don't have any jpegs small enough to load here, and I'm on a device with crap editing tools. I can try cropping this cat pic down to just the head, see if that shrinks it enough. Or "blur" might work.

Yup. That reduced Eliza file size massively.

Retest with lower res Eliza, it says about .2 mp.

Ok, that worked. I think the editor here hates PNG, which is the usual format for screen caps. So conversion is needed to something that's not pixel for pixel reproduction.

DaveC426913 ...

Is that a feature, ghosting all the text tools, for someone with a small screen, i.e. so they don't tap icons by accident? I had thought ghosting was a software thing for functions unavailable, or when a running program was lagging or freezing. Didn't realize you could deliberately select that.

No. That button turns on BB code, which is basically "reveal code" mode. It allows you to manually add markdown code.

So rich text is not enabled. You add the rich text as BBcode.

I just recently encountered the same issue, posting this:

I used this online compression site:

It did the job perfectly - reduced the image with no visual loss of fidelity. Give it a try...
