Actually been around for quite a while, the favorite of preachers for decades. Can be subsumed by the interdimensional UFO hypothesis of Keel, Vallée, etc dating back to the 1970s along with similarly "sci-fi opera" simulation theories.

Actually that raises an interesting point: why have we heard so little about this much-touted release of “government files”? I had confidently expected the various cranks and nutters would have had a field day with that, creating headlines all over the media. But it seems there has been almost no reaction. Can it be that they have found absolutely nothing to create a cover up/conspiracy scandal story about?
 
Any thread prompted by an Adam Frank blog has potential. And he pinpoints again this cultural shift away from science (bo-ring! abstract! picky!) and towards more theocracy lite. So now all those unconvincing fuzzy blob videos and unanchored personal testimonies can be massaged into Hell's devil-monkeys and the people who've sensitively sensed their naughty little pitchforks and pokers.
