I would be interested to see what various peopel make of this. Can you think of some truth, and demonstrate why it is true? I'm not talking about "I believe I'm a dog, therefore I am because I believe it" type crap. Really have a go at it.

Umm yes maybe.. try this :

your opening statement was

"I would be interested to see what various peopel make of this. Can you think of some truth, and demonstrate why it is true? I'm not talking about "I believe I'm a dog, therefore I am because I believe it" type crap. Really have a go at it."

I read this statement and replied to it. I am seeing the same webpage you are, and that means that the webpage exists, making the fact that it is here "truth", because even though you and I don't know each other, we both see the same thing, from a different place. Soon someone else will most likely reply, involving a third person who also sees it.

Bah.. someone's going to blow me away, I can see it coming ;)

What about something involving science, religion, psychology, human nature? Anything like that you can think of?

I can make any number of true statements about my beliefs. I can also make any number of true statements about how things seem to me. It's true that it seems to me that there is sciforums, and it's true that I believe this is a computer here.

If you can buy a paradigm case argument, then you can come up with lots more truths. For example, I know that Adam posted this thread because the experience I had reading this thread was a paradigm case of what the words "Adam posting a thread" mean to me. Thus I can't be wrong in saying Adam posted this thread... although I can't say if anyone but me would say that since I don't know their definition of the experience, and I can't guarantee that I'll have the experience of Adam posting a thread every time I look at this thread.

Of course, necessary truths don't say much. They're just tautologies.

I knowwhat you wanted Adam I was just having a little fun. :p

The reason I didn't reply properly is because theres not one thing I can think of - anything which requires belief is not nessecarily truth.

If you are talking maths you can prove something, in science you can disprove it but if you talk about philosophy its imposable to prove ANYTHING because it depends on perception

So Descartes' is in a bar, right? The waitress walks up and taps the brooding Rene. "Do ya want another?" she says. Descartes said "I think not," and disapeared.

HAH! Haha...? Ha? Oh cmon, it's funny.

I'm not sure if I can be right on this one:

We are Life because
  • we can cut a hand and still exist-we are not the body
  • we can stop thinking and still exist-we are not the mind

What is Life? Perhaps that's the answer...

Love,
Nelson

sorry, but you are wrong. I can place some body in a tank of highly active acid. There won't be any body, there won't be a mind, there won't be anything

Avatar,

I'm saying that if you lose a part of your body you will still exist. As I said, it is your body. You have a body, you are not your body...

it matters which part of a body. By your definition head is you, because we don't have a technology now for a head to exist without a body.

Of course there is symbiotic relationship between unicelular organisms in order to form pluricelular ones... ;)
