I honestly did not think he would be stupid enough, but obviously the pig boar knows no bounds of stupidity. With all that is on him right now rallying the conservatives makes some sense, but of course this will rally the left, and worse it makes no sense. At the cost of stripping rights they claim it will save the military money on medical cost, when it saves very little (Viagra cost the military more!)

The right have long lambasted the idea of transsexuals in the military because it opens the door for men who could not make the male fitness standards to suddenly proclaim they are female and get in on the female fitness standards, that and pervert in female showers and bathrooms, and lions and tigers, oh my. When trans get in on "girly" standards I will laugh, oh wait that is already happening, well I laughed.

Anyways anyone that loves the cult-classic war movie "Starship Troopers" will understand my answer to all this: One fitness (and mental aptitude) standard per career type and department in the military. No division by sex or gender. As for showers and bathrooms, that what stalls are for.
 
And it turns out he even lied about this.

Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail."

Washington (CNN) - The Joint Chiefs of Staff, including chairman General Joseph Dunford, were not aware President Donald Trump planned to tweet a ban on transgender service members, three US defense officials told CNN -- the latest indication that top military leaders across all four service branches were blindsided by the President's announcement.

But while Trump's tweet states that he consulted with his generals and military experts ahead of making the announcement, US defense officials have indicated that many of the top brass were caught off guard by the policy change.

One of the heads of the military branches was informed by a staffer of the President's tweets on transgender policy and had no idea it was coming, the official said.

Adding to the confusion is that Trump's decision came without a plan in place to implement it.

Trump is talking about continuing an existing ban that was scheduled to end in a year via an Obama executive order.

If men, women, and those in between, gays, lesbians, transgenders or trans dressers wish to serve their country as potential cannon fodder, I cannot think of any good reason to stop them.
 
I think this is an effort by Trump to shore up his base. Trump's recent attacks on Sessions have caused rifts to form within his base and in Congress. This transgender business is a soothing salve to mend the wounds on the Republican Party inflicted by Trump with his recent attacks on Sessions. That's all it is.

Nope. Transgender people are currently serving in the military. From the US Military website: "Effective immediately, transgender Service members may serve openly, and they can no longer be discharged or otherwise separated from the military solely for being transgender individuals." (https://www.defense.gov/News/Special-Reports/0616_transgender-policy/) Per Snopes, as of yesterday about 250 people have asked their gender to be changed in military paperwork. And per AP, there are between between 1,320 and 6,630 trans soldiers out of 1.3 million active-duty troops.

Does Trump have anyone with actual military experience - not even expertise, just experience - among his close advisors? Not counting Russians.

The interesting question is whether the US military command is allowed to ignore Trump's tweets.

He is commander in chief, and his tweets are official communications - according to White House officials. We have an interesting test of civilian control of the military coming up.

House Republicans were planning to pass a spending bill stacked with his campaign promises, including money to build his border wall with Mexico.

But an internal House Republican fight over transgender troops was threatening to blow up the bill. And House GOP insiders feared they might not have the votes to pass the legislation because defense hawks wanted a ban on Pentagon-funded sex reassignment operations — something GOP leaders wouldn’t give them.

They turned to Trump, who didn’t hesitate. In the flash of a tweet, he announced that transgender troops would be banned altogether.​
 
News item: Pentagon will not do anything about transgender until it receives a formal directive through channels. Tweets don't count.
