Trump 2.0

Quite funny to see the effect of the BBC's gambit of demanding to see all Trump's financial records ....

You know what's even funnier? We could have avoided all of this shit, except it was more important to complain about transgender and black people and uppity women. The lesson, of course, is this is what happens when people trust terfs, Nazis, and Christian nationalists.

I guess it's just kind of weird to think about the number of people who want the world this way so they can complain, or gossip, or otherwise prattle their self-righteousness. Maybe it's a disease, but they don't want a cure. So, yeah, maybe they really can help themselves. Maybe it isn't really an accident of circumstance. There comes a point at which it looks like an act of will for the simple reason that we don't believe they really are so stupid.

Quite funny to see the effect of the BBC's gambit of demanding to see all Trump's financial records, to support his $10bn damage claim. This has now resulted in his legal team scrambling to narrow the claim to exclude damage to his businesses and restrict it to mere reputational damage. They will struggle to attach a $10bn price tag to that.
He may end up having to pay the BBC for having pushed his reputation into slightly less negative territory.

Will be almost impossible (in normal times, at least) for Trump to win his amended suit. His lawyers are amending it to cover only "the reputational injury to the President, full stop". Given he won subsequently won the Presidency in 2024 (rigged or otherwise), where's the evidence of reputational injury? And as he said himself: "I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody, and I wouldn't lose any voters, OK?" And that's even before other legal matters such as whether he can sue the BBC in the US given that it was not officially broadcast in the US.

My bet is that he'll simply drop the suit when it, er, suits him, when there's enough other detritus in the Trumposphere to cover up whatever else he is trying to get away with. The BBC should sue for damages, though. But they won't, as it would cost money and there's no guarantee of winning anything.

In fact, he seems to have a policy of mounting these vexatious suits to intimidate people simply by forcing them to incur legal costs in their defence. I'm not sure how many of them ever get to trial. In fact I think I detect some signs that the BBC is indeed handling stuff related to Trump with kid gloves, no doubt aware that his hawk-eyed lawyers will be on the lookout for anything remotely contentious or suggestive of bias that they could use as further ammunition. So to that extent he has already "won", perhaps. But the BBC is still covering him with studied neutrality and letting the readers, viewers and listeners form for themselves an opinion of Trump and all his works. It is not really necessary to point out the obvious. ;)

I don't mind if the BBC do that. Ideally they should report facts, not spin it. I think what Panorama did was foolish, and rightly given a slap on the wrists. But the lawsuit was, well, it's own issue. Trump is trying to delay handing over his financial info (a judge recently just approved the delay while an appeal over the need to provide is ongoing - and that's before his lawyers amended the scope of the suit) but, along with the recent Capital One revelation that they closed 300+ accounts related to him and his business empire due to a money-laundering investigation, it's clear that his financial records are something he desperately wants kept hidden. No wonder he came up with the "agreement" with the DoJ that he and his family would be immune from IRS investigations (and hopefully that gets struck down as illegal).

Yes I agree about the Panorama programme. It's very annoying when factual programmes appear loaded or spun in some way. In fact I've given up on many Radio 4 factual programmes because the BBC has decided to put continuous background music on. This inevitably tries to engage the listener emotionally, which is exactly what one should not do when deciding what one thinks about an issue. I think they are fools to do it, but I'm just out of step with the shitegeist, I suppose.

How It's Going (Military Center Remix)

Longtime Congressional correspondent Jamie Dupree↱ observes:

Suddenly the White House ballroom has a new name after a federal appeals court panel found that President Trump demolished and built something at the White House without authorization or funding from Congress

So, yeah. The White House Military Center.

Methinks that one of those three is not like the others. Somebody is prosecuting a political agenda again.

Indeed.

OMG did Tiassa really say that.
The most continuous self-righteous blogger on this site, is putting biological women up against the wall, for having an opinion he considers to be equivalent to Naziism.

OMG did Tiassa really say that.

Well, you should probably take a moment to consider what is actually happening under the second Trump administration. Chatter about kitty litter and secret operating theatres should be ridiculous, but here we are. Shit-talk about black people in Ohio ought to be ridiculous, but here we are. Susan Collins is very concerned about Roe v. Wade, but here we are. Really, even the bit about Nazis is supposed to be beyond the pale, but here we are.

And there's absolutely nothing new about it. This is #WhatTheyVotedFor.

And there's absolutely nothing new about it. This is #WhatTheyVotedFor.
I think that what is new--or new-ish, maybe--is the degree to which the most egregious becomes acceptable within common discourse. A president calls a reporter an "idiot" and not a single person raises an objection. Non-answers to questions like "who won the 2020 election?" merit shockingly little pushback, such that even poor 140-year-old Chuck Grassley can't even work out why it's such a (allegedly) contentious question in the first place. And here "biological women" is substituted for "people who oppose the rights of trans women".

And it's not that plenty of people do not recognize the obvious error (I think), but that so many people simply view correcting such errors anymore as exercises in futility.

The U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln is in such bad shape its crew is collapsing toward suicide. Stars and Stripes↱ reports:

Family members and sailors say months at sea with no end in sight to a grueling Middle East deployment have intensified worries about mental health and the risk of self-harm aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln ....

.... In one case, a spouse tearfully told officials that she received a message that same day from her husband saying "he hopes he doesn't wake up tomorrow," according to one of the estimated 200 attendees at the San Diego town hall meeting ....

.... Interviews with active-duty sailors and family members, along with dozens of public social media comments and posts by crew members, describe sailors struggling with exhaustion and declining morale, including reports of suicidal thoughts and at least one instance where a crew member was prevented from jumping overboard.

Navy Times↱ tells us:

Annabelle Loma has spoken with her husband only a few times since he attempted to jump overboard from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln during his current deployment.

Communication has been difficult to come by, and he is now on medical hold.

Loma, who lives in San Diego, said her husband had been repeatedly overextended before he tried to jump from the carrier.

"He's scared," Loma said. "He thinks he'll get a dishonorable discharge, and just because he was burnt out, his 13-year career is ruined, just like that. That's not fair, that's not right. That's not what he should be worrying about right now."

Loma said she initially received a call from the ship's ombudsman after the incident but has not heard from anyone with the Navy in recent weeks ....

.... In a separate incident aboard Lincoln, a sailor on watch saw a shipmate preparing to go overboard, and he intervened, according to the sailor's wife, Maria Rodriguez.

Rodriguez said her husband called out to the sailor before reaching the individual and grabbing their arms, pulling them onto the deck. Her husband told her the sailor had not yet gone over the side when he got there. Three other sailors heard the commotion and came running to help.

The Guardian↱ attempts to summarize:

Mike Levin, a Democratic member of congress from California, has sounded the alarm over conditions onboard the warship which is in its fifth month of combat operations against Iran. He described the lot of the crew on X as "moldy showers, broken toilets, laundry down for weeks, long stretches with no hot water, a meal that came down to half a cup of rice and two tortillas. No soap, deodorant, or toothpaste" ....

.... The current crunch has been months in the making. The warship left San Diego on 21 November and was originally intended for the Pacific but was redirected to the Middle East once the US-Israel war with Iran began.

Since then … the 5,000-plus crew has had only two days on land, in Guam in December and Oman in July. The deployment was scheduled to end in May but has been extended a couple of times amid the ongoing war.

In April there was a flurry of public criticism about dire conditions onboard the carrier. Photos emerged of poor quality and rationed food, and there were reports of water shortages, moldy showers and broken laundry machines.

Pete Hegseth, the defense secretary, dismissed the accounts as "more fake news".

Levin responded to Hegseth's remark this week. He said: "These men and women signed up to serve their country. The least their country owes them is hot water, a working toilet, and a real meal. Hegseth cannot even manage that, and he has the nerve to look their families in the eye and call them liars."

I really don't know how these sailors are going to feel when they finally make it home and find out they lost the war. Again, Stars and Stripes:

"My son is currently on that ship and listening to him say that he and his shipmates constantly think about jumping off the ship just for relief is so hard to listen to," one worried parent wrote to Stars and Stripes in July. "We are all tucked in at night in our beds at night meanwhile our loved ones are out there fighting with no understanding as to what they’re defending."

The petty politics, here, observe that of course it was conservatives who did this to the Navy. Of course it was the flag-waving patriot parade that brought this to bear. We understand this isn't what Trump voters expected inasmuch as the result itself ought to be unimaginable, but this is also how Republicans prove that government just doesn't work. It's what they voted for, at least according to the practical endorsement: They hired warmongers for peace, grifters to fight corruption, bourgeois business leaders for good jobs at good wages, and Republicans to cut the deficit.

And if we suggest that maybe they just didn't think this part through, it's also true that they hired white supremacists to try to cancel nonwhites. At some point, they either weren't really thinking any of it through, or else they were. Either way, the outcome they get is #WhatTheyVotedFor. And, altogether, it's a hell of a toll for a whoopsie.

I have to say that I find the image of Trump cowering in a catering cart while they wheel him away from the threat of an Iranian air force attack - an organization, of course, Trump claims he completely obliterated - hilarious.

And the cherry on top is that Trump took Natalie Harp, a young aide, on his secret "safe" flight, but not Stephen Miller or Marco Rubio. They remained behind on the decoy plane.

I don't think most XX (or even XY) female-phenotype women are TERFs.

If they could put Turnip in a catering container, they could at least put a cabinet member in a...

And press secretary and prolific liar Katherine Leavitt is leaving her post at months end. One of her more hilarious assertions has been that Turnip's policies have made the country "more affordable."

Do we know yet what Mar-a-Lago-faced bimbo will replace her? Someone with a proven record of mendacity and submissiveness to Trump.

I am now reading that the CIA had low confidence in the alleged threat, which came from Israeli intelligence. One official is quoted as saying there is general scepticism, suspecting this “intelligence” may be more about shaping presidential attitudes than any real evidence of danger.

It obviously suits the Israelis to talk up the severity of the threats posed by Iran. They may have invented this one, to rattle Trump’s cage a bit and get coverage in the more hysterical corners of the far right media.

In other news, an energy firm with Trump ties, called Greenland Energy, has unloaded plenty of drilling gear at a site in Greenland. They claim to be working in tandem with a UK firm 80 Mile PLC that supposedly has a permit, but Greenland officials have said that that company's permit is expired. So, basically, a US company is ignoring international borders, legislation, authority, and wants to start drilling in a foreign country.
Almost certainly they will be forced to delay any attempts. Landry, the US envoy to Greenland, had hoped that oil could be flowing in as early as 10 months, but Greenland authorities are going to take their time in reviewing the potential impacts (environmental etc, as there are some rare birds, and wildlife that the locals rely on). This is likely to push back any drilling to the winter of 2027, at least officially. Landry had been claiming that the oil under the Jameson Land region could ease the issues related to the Iran war (although I'm not sure how oil in 10 months time could really do that... unless the intention is for that war to continue for that long???).
Anyhoo - the share price of Greenland Energy dropped by more than 1/3 on the announcement of the delays, and it is yet to be seen whether the Trump-tied company will just forge ahead and ignore legalities.
Separately, Trump has once again been circling the drain with his "threats" on Greenland. Presumably more distraction is needed from whatever else his administration is doing.
