3. Utilized executive authority, federal agencies, and legal maneuvers to target and suppress political opposition.

Weaponization of Federal Agencies

  • Department of Justice (DOJ):Trump ended the post-Watergate norm of DOJ independence, using it to investigate and prosecute critics.
    • Political Indictments: After professional prosecutors initially refused due to lack of evidence, Trump-installed loyalists like Lindsey Halligan indicted high-profile critics, including former FBI Director James Comey.
    • Weaponization Working Group: Established to investigate state and federal officials who had previously investigated Trump.
  • FBI & Civil Service: The administration conducted mass layoffs of career officials, including those involved in January 6 investigations, to replace them with personnel more loyal to the president.
  • IRS & Regulatory Power: Trump fired career staff at the IRS and used the agency to target liberal non-profits, threatening to strip the tax-exempt status of institutions like Harvard University.
Suppression of Free Speech and Press

  • Media Retaliation: Trump has filed multiple defamation lawsuits against news organizations, including The New York Times, CBS News, and The Wall Street Journal.
  • Censorship: The FCC, under Chair Brendan Carr, revived "news distortion" policies to target major broadcasters (ABC, NBC, CBS).
  • Access Restrictions: Outlets like the Associated Press were banned from White House briefings after refusing to use administration-mandated terminology like "Gulf of America".
Targeting Legal and Civil Society

  • Legal Profession: Trump signed executive orders targeting law firms that represented his political opponents, such as Perkins Coie and Jenner & Block, by revoking security clearances and barring them from federal buildings.
  • Non-Profit Crackdown: Following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, the administration labeled several liberal groups as "domestic terrorists" to justify criminal probes and funding freezes.
  • Higher Education: The administration froze billions in federal funding for universities that promoted diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) or pro-Palestinian advocacy.
Expansion of Presidential Power

  • Executive Orders: Trump issued orders declaring the executive branch an extension of his person and claimed unilateral authority to interpret federal laws.
  • Domestic Military Deployment: Trump deployed federalized National Guard troops and active-duty Marines to cities like Los Angeles and Chicago against the objections of local governors.
  • Revocation of Protections: In an unprecedented move, Trump revoked Secret Service protection for his 2024 opponent, Kamala Harris, and security clearances for dozens of former intelligence officials.

4. Taken action to align private-sector practices with the administration's ideological priorities and reduce independence of government institutions - analogous to "Gleichschaltung."

Civil Service and Institutional "Coordination"

  • Schedule F (Schedule Policy/Career): Reinstated in January 2025, this executive order allows for the reclassification of tens of thousands of career civil servants into "at-will" positions. Critics argue this mirrors the 1933 "cleansing" of the German civil service by replacing nonpartisan experts with political loyalists.
  • Subjugation of Independent Agencies: Trump has asserted direct authority over traditionally independent regulatory bodies like the FCC, FTC, and SEC. A February 2025 executive order requires these agencies to submit regulations for White House review and coordinate their legal positions with the Attorney General, effectively ending their operational independence from the presidency.
  • Loyalty Tests and Purges: The administration has reportedly removed members from at least 10 different agencies and emphasized that "failure to faithfully implement administration policies" is grounds for dismissal for newly reclassified career employees.
Ideological Alignment of Society

  • Targeting DEI and Private Sector Practices: Executive orders issued in early 2025 and 2026 target Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs not just in the federal government, but also among federal contractors and the private sector. These orders use federal enforcement and contract termination as leverage to "coordinate" corporate behavior with administration ideology.
  • NGO Funding Alignment: A 2025 presidential memorandum directs agencies to review and align all funding for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) with the "goals and priorities of my Administration," potentially withholding funds from organizations that dissent from the president's agenda.
  • Judicial Influence: Critics point to the appointment of loyalist judges and the Supreme Court’s rulings on presidential immunity as a form of judicial "coordination" that removes traditional checks on executive power.
Counter-Arguments and Justification

  • Unitary Executive Theory: Supporters argue that because the President is the only official (along with the VP) directly elected by the people, all executive branch functions must be subject to his supervision to ensure the government "answers to the people".
  • Combating the "Deep State": These actions are described as necessary to overcome a "recalcitrant" federal bureaucracy that allegedly obstructs the will of the voters.

5. Began persecution of the "Other" - immigrants, in this case - through dehumanizing rhetoric, mass detention, and the systematic erosion of legal protections.

  • Dehumanizing Rhetoric: President Trump has frequently described immigrants using terms like "animals," "invaders," and "garbage," and has claimed they are "poisoning the blood of our country." This mirrors the Nazi portrayal of Jews as existential threats to national purity and security.
  • Mass Detention and "Concentration": The administration has drastically expanded the immigrant detention system, funding the construction of vast new facilities and using military bases like Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to hold non-citizens. Critics liken these to "concentration camps" due to their scale and the "barbaric" conditions reported by government experts.
  • Systematic Registration and Surveillance: New requirements for undocumented individuals to carry registration documents at all times have been compared to the mandatory ID cards and "red J" passport stamps used to track and control Jewish populations in 1930s Germany.
  • Weaponizing the Legal System:
    • Alien Enemies Act: The administration has invoked this 1798 law to deport individuals with limited or no due process, a move analysts describe as "ethnic cleansing through fear."
    • Expedited Removal: Policies now allow for the immediate deportation of non-citizens found anywhere in the U.S. who cannot prove two years of continuous presence, bypassing judicial review.
  • Targeting Children and Families: The "zero tolerance" policy led to the systematic separation of thousands of children from their parents at the border. Additionally, the administration has moved to end birthright citizenship and denaturalize certain citizens, challenging the idea that citizenship is inviolable.
  • Restricting Education and Support: Similar to the 1933 Nazi laws excluding Jews from schools, the Trump administration has pressured universities to restrict student rights and has cut funding for legal aid and education programs for unaccompanied minors.

Far from a win for anyone. Hopefully though, there is still enough reasonable thinking people still left in the USA, to see the error of their ways, in even beginning to believe this man was ever their savour.
No one thought he was their savior. Do you think your PM is your savior?

This is as far as Seattle will go in criticizing Trump. Even so, we have to have the "air" quotes.

Again, with the "air" quotes...

Generally, we get the apologetics.

What did Hitler do during his first year in power - you do realize it took him a bit to "spin up" to speed, right?

1. Systematically dismantled Germany's democratic institutions.

2. Consolidated Dictatorial Power: The Reichstag Fire Decree (Feb 1933) suspended civil liberties, followed by the Enabling Act (March 1933) which allowed him to pass laws without parliamentary consent.

3. Suppressed political opposition through a combination of emergency decrees, legislative manipulation, and state-sanctioned terror.

4. Initiated the "coordination" (Gleichschaltung) of society.

5. Began legal persecution of Jews.

-----

What about Trump? Let's compare and contrast...

1. Systematically dismantled and weakened America's democratic institutions by politicizing independent institutions, undermining election administration, intimidating the press and chilling dissent.

2. Consolidated executive power and weakened traditional democratic checks and balances by bypassing constitutional checks and undermining electoral legitimacy.

3. Utilized executive authority, federal agencies, and legal maneuvers to target and suppress political opposition.

4. Taken action to align private-sector practices with the administration's ideological priorities and reduce independence of government institutions - analogous to "Gleichschaltung."

5. Began persecution of the "Other" - immigrants, in this case - through dehumanizing rhetoric, mass detention, and the systematic erosion of legal protections.

I invite your refutation of these points - please compare and contrast to show how Trump's actions differ in kind. At best, you can beg to differ in degree, and even that will be difficult in many cases.

Balance that, Seattle..

You are obsessed.

No one thought he was their savior. Do you think your PM is your savior?
Wow! You are either a fanatical liar, fanatically delusional, or a fanatical MAGA Hillbilly.
Good to see you see some light anyway.
You are obsessed.
Yes, you also inferred i was obsessed when I called you to order and revealed your true feelings, towards this convicted felon and probable pedophile.

You are obsessed.

What's wrong Seattle? Too much "balance" there, for you?

Hate it when pesky facts interfere with your preferred narrative...

Maybe I'll start a "Trump as dictator - fact of the day" thread - just for you, Seattle. Wouldn't be difficult to do, plenty to choose from.

Here's one for today - we'll file it in "2. Consolidated executive power and weakened traditional democratic checks and balances."
And tag it: "3. Utilized executive authority, federal agencies, and legal maneuvers to target and suppress political opposition."

White House Scrambles to Wipe Trump Meltdown Footage

While he thought the cameras weren’t rolling, the president let it rip about his true feelings about Supreme Court justices, including his own appointees, after he stormed out of oral arguments at the court earlier that day.

“Republicans, judges, and justices,” Trump began. “They always want to show that they’re independent.”

“‘I don’t care if Trump appointed me, I don’t care, if it doesn’t make any difference to me. I’m voting against him!” Trump said, visibly annoyed.

“Cause they want to show their independence, you know, stupid people,” complained Trump.

Same related event, different take:

Fidgeting Trump Had to Be Moved During SCOTUS Humiliation

BETTER FOR GLOWERING

President Donald Trump demanded to be seated directly in front of the Supreme Court justices during oral arguments in his birthright citizenship case, only to fidget throughout the hearing.

Trump made history Wednesday by being the first U.S. president to attend Supreme Court oral arguments, with critics interpreting his presence as a sign that he was trying to intimidate the justices into ruling in his favor.

Please do "balance" this out with a "daily good policy" - I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding one, right? Just one?

If all he does is vent rather than discuss how to fix the lawnmower, maybe?

The hardest part here, to follow on that analogy, is to convince certain members that the "lawnmower is broke" in the first place.

Some people keep insisting that the lawnmower is just fine - no need to discuss "how to fix it" - sound familiar?

It's good for US citizens when the EU pays for its own defense.
Folks, I see no need to argue further with someone who seems to have zero knowledge of how NATO works, how the EU budgets for defense, or why helping defend allies (and not antagonizing them) is a long-standing element of how nations defend themselves from a common adversary.

My analogy was mainly directed at his continued calling Roosters for ever "obsessed" with Trump. Amusing, given this is the Trump thread, whose purpose is to consider the policies, conduct and character of....yeah. A slur that is equivalent to calling people on a DIY repair forum on lawnmowers "obsessed with lawnmowers." Did you notice how easily he missed the obvious point of my earlier posting?

Please do "balance" this out with a "daily good policy" - I'm sure you'll have no trouble finding one, right? Just one?
Over so many years, and so many posts, and he's yet to provide even just a single example of one of these "good policies". Something something about egregious trolling goes here, I think?

Some people keep insisting that the lawnmower is just fine - no need to discuss "how to fix it" - sound familiar?
"Why don't you ever post on the GOOD things the "supposedly" broken lawnmower is doing? I mean, it holds down that pile of cardboard and keeps it from blowing away. And it's something to tinker with. Does your hatred of the lawnmower blind you to those FACTS?"

Trump actually said this yesterday:

"You know, we’re not supposed to be seduced that way right? But I am. When someone’s nice to me, I love that person. Even if they’re bad people. I couldn’t care less. I’ll fight to the end for them.”

Which explains so much. He will support Putin over our own allies, just because Putin is "nice to him."

In recent days Hegseth prayed during a meeting/speech, calling on God to ensure "all their rounds found their mark" or some such wording, and the Pope countered that God doesn't answer the prayer of warmongers (words to that effect). So now Hegseth has excluded Catholics from a "Protestant-only" service at the Pentagon chapel on Good Friday, which historically has been an inter-faith affair.
So not only are they looking to pick fights with Islam, they're now looking to have a go at Christian denominations? Apparently this is just another premise sample of Hegseth showing bias to certain faith groups, even within the Christian umbrella. Given that the VP is a Catholic, this could get interesting. And the more the Pope is persuaded to counter what Hegseth spews, the wider any fracture will get.

So Christian Nationalism in the US is only for a certain brand of Christianity?

Funnily, there are several brands of Christian nationalism within the US--including Catholic nationalism. And their belief systems range from neoliberal to neocon to libertarian and everything in between. Recent studies suggest that more than 50 percent of Americans subscribe to some brand of Christian nationalism, which is absolutely terrifying.

Nearly three decades back, I knew an anthropologist who was studying forms of Christian Evangelicals. At the time, they wielded considerable power and political capital, but I never thought it would come to what it has turned into in the present day. They seemed decidedly not mainstream then, but they are very much the mainstream now.

One of the things Trump is pushing for is for the Federal government to really only provide the military, with all the other stuff, like Medicaid, Medicare, daycare, education, etc, being provided by the state. This despite his campaign promises that there'd be so much money coming into the country from tariffs that daycare et al could easily be paid for.
Anyhoo, the point isn't that, it's that Rubio has just said how different Iran would be, how much better they'd be, if instead of putting money into their military they instead spent it on their citizens.

Yeah. You can't make this shit up. :)

Edit: the reason I brought this up is that Trump's 2027 budget is for $1.5tn military budget, offset by slashing all the education/healthcare etc depts, all while retaining the same federal tax levels... so he takes with one hand, says you can get it back by reduced federal taxes and higher state taxes, but then doesn't reduce federal taxes.
:)

Turnip really does love the Grover Norquist maneuver, which is to drown the federal baby in the bathtub. Norquist was a small gubment zealot, Turnip just likes drowning babies. Norquist was a genuine fiscal hawk who wanted to wipe out the national debt, Turnip couldn't give the tiniest shit about the debt. If other countries start shifting away from using the the US dollar as a reserve currency, which looks more and more likely, the US is in a lot of trouble - it will be really hard to service our huge debt.

What's your point, Seattle? You don't know about what's lawful and unlawful under international law? Or you don't care about international law? Or what?
It's not enforceable. I'm not that concerned with that aspect. If it's not a good idea, then it's not a good idea but the international law aspect, who cares? Since when do major countries let international law stop anything?
