Tinnitus

I have tinnitus, got it from editing music and working in telemarketing, plus other forms of soundpollution. It sounds like a constant ringing in the ears, not only is it annoying it also drowns out regular speach at times.
What you describe doesn't sound like tinnitus, more like hallucinations.

I used to imagine as a child the bogeyman was crossing a field to get me while I lay in bed at night. I could hear the footsteps.

The sound was my pulse.

Having worked around machinery most my adult life, I'm surprised I haven't a problem with my hearing. I've always used PPE at work, so I credit my good fortune to practical precautions. As far as monsters hiding under the bed, not even in my dreams.

When I was 40+ years younger, very loud music caused me to hear a "rasping" sound with it.

Concerts are the worst for your ears. I never appreciated the volume when I went to a stadium concert--always left my hearing altered for several hours following the event.

Filters from a cigarette will do the trick too.

Twist em off an unsmoken one, unless you like nicotine yellow mixed with ear wax yellow.

Back years ago when it was a problem for me, I just stuck my little fingers in my ears when music got too loud.

This topic went to hell, eh?

I carry ear protection everywhere I go. The inexpensive ones work pretty well for most pistols and power tools, until somebody pulls out a cannon or a monster truck...
