/what is the context?
The context was my relationships to you people and that I've involuntarily abstracted you into a completely subjective invocation of family.
/that this medium is less expressive of one's true self?
What is one's "true self"? It's always changing isn't it? And yes, this medium is only an aspect of expression. To tap "one's true self" I'd imagine I'd have to uhm.. "get to know you" which is uh, well, limited in that I only get a hint of your vibe, whereas IRL I get the full effect.
/i could easily make out that inet accurately tells me about the real you! a forum is pure thought on display. extraneous info such as ethnicity, career, family, station in life, blah, is conveniently not an issue. in any case, if perceptive, one could easily discern this stuff (ethnici....) without it ever having been directly addressed.
eh, I agree and disagree at the same time. you have a point, but you ignore the drawbacks. for instance, I AM perceptive and can generally smell a liar by body language, tone of voice, inflection, mannerism, etc. i just can't trust my instincts in the same manner on the net because there are fewer cues.
I'm not sure about "pure thought on display". You have a point, but the thought you speak of can be heavily contrived, reprocessed, diluted and changed by the act of writing rather than speech, which of course I'd imagine you could argue the same thing about.
/no wes you will not. i could remain poker faced and you will remain in the dark. expressiveness is for kids.
eh, i don't think so man. you talk that smack but maybe you couldn't keep that poker face. maybe I'd see your tell. pardon, maybe I'm just uh, wrong.. but I think I can tell a lot more about you if you're in front me than a thousand miles away. the inet interferes with my excessive amount of perception aboot someone's psychology. i'm an excellent psycho-analyist once I get to know someone, and thus far the inet limits that ability. i must lack the necessary imagination.
/i could be a homeless bum on the beach (which at one time i was) and you wouldnt give me the time of day. here on the internet, you do cos thoughts are what matters
I'd give you the time of day unless you tried to steal my watch. Get a job you piece of shit. LOL. *kicks sand in your face*
/body language will find its counterpart on the internet.
but it really hasn't yet.
/perhaps someone will make a science out intepreting the structure, styling and content of one's writings and give it a psych profile. smilies are there to help as well
yeah maybe your perception is different than mine. i need the reel deel for feedback that I only halfass get on the net. the internet is a fucking STAGE man. you can put on whatever kind of show you want. that's a bit tougher to do IRL, but possible.
/wes, its all in the numbers. if you are often proved wrong then your opinion is worthless.
hmm.. that seems like kind of a nazi kind of thing to say. true I guess for the most part, but sometimes idiots have fleeting good points. sometimes idiots are just pretending to be idiots so that people will consider their opinion idiotic such that they can laugh at easily manipulated you were... blah blah blah. i just think the whole "stage" thing can really fuck one's perception of what's happening. while I dig the pure though aspect, there is more to a person than their presentation of themselves on a fucking BBS.
however if you tend to usually be right with your assessments of someone/something, go with it. this is where imagination and intelligent guesses com into play. trust your instincts.
/the "sameness of it all" is one of my pet peeves but hey, thats just me
you mean words words words blah?
/imagination oft gets a bum rap of being fanciful. i use it to indicate a line of rational thought one would typically not explore. there remains a margin of error but i can work with that
yeah but dude, you're talking major error here I'd think. at least in some cases. eh, who knows. i'd imagine there are a lot of factors in play.
/dunno
you don't think that one on one collaborative interaction with a person IRL will let you get to know them lickety split? depends on the person I suppose.. which is probably the issue at hand. all of this takes on different meaning for different folks. who knows what your ability to percieve from text is vs your ability to percieve IRL and who knows what your ability is to accurately represent yourself.. blah blah. in general, people develop these skills face to face or in social groups IRL, etc. this whole net this is new to the species, so it'll be interesting to see where it goes.
/color me stupid but i missed the whole disenfranchised point
a revisit...
*colors*
Uh, gendy made some comment about those who think of her as evil being necessarily disenfranchised. stupid joke. didn't work. I was hoping we'd all have a great chuckle. ah, ha. ha.
/why not rethink your approach?
I just did. :bugeye:
