Despite exposure to A/C during the World Cup and the consequent social media coverage about air conditioning in North America, it's just never going to take off. (With regard to Europe in general, not just the UK.) Too much of a cultural difference is lurking behind the issue, and the electrical infrastructure, urban design and architecture, and climate mitigation concerns among locals just aren't oriented toward accommodating it pervasively.

It's just never going to take off.
It will eventually. Simple evolution; people without it will die.

And after the next generation succeeds this one, more will be familiar with it, and accept it. This will also, of course, exacerbate the problem for others, and that will drive more rapid acceptance as well.
 
I say just suffer if that's what the people and the government decides. Or move.
A confession. for all my big talk about being British and just using fans, I enquired about portable AC units this month when we were at 29C.
Shops were also selling out of coolers.

In 2021 we had a freakishly hot period in June of 42 C. I've lived here since the 1980s and it's never done that. I don't think it got that hot even in August in all that time.

"Need a vacation? Come to baking Britain"...that has a nice ring to it...
 
Yes, the article mentions that when it talks about passive cooling.
I suspect this refers to a lot of modern British housebuilding, with low ceilings and smallish windows, designed to be cheap to build and cheap to heat in winter. My Victorian house has the high ceilings typical of the period and the ground floor at least stays cool pretty well with passive measures (I have fitted double glazing which helps quite a bit). It got to 26C in the living room yesterday, while it was 35C outside. Mind you, the top floor, under the roof, was pretty hot admittedly. British housing stock is notoriously old, largely because Victorian houses were built to last and we didn’t suffer the degree of bomb damage that much of Northern Europe experienced. I suspect many people in these older houses can manage better in heat waves than those in postwar housing.

I feel sure that reversible heat pumps will be taken up more and more in future, though probably mainly in newbuilds as they are not practical to retrofit in most cases. Let’s hope these heat waves help make the case for heat pumps. For heat alone they don’t look like a good deal, but if you get AC as well that changes the calculation a lot.

I really tried not to snicker, living where 29 is considered mild, below normal highs. Saw something in The Grauniad a few days ago where a lead said something like "UK issues heat warnings, 30C expected in some areas." Frau Vat and I had a good laugh, as we anticipated near 40C that day.

This thread seems to spin off from the brief chat in Fit at 60, where methods of passive cooling had come up. In the US, there's fairly wide aversion to what I do (open all windows at night, close in morning, slide RHB sheets into sun-facing windows, open attic to augment convection, etc) as too much bother. Many Americans like pushing a button, and having laziness marketed to them*. While I sort of enjoy the chore, and energy savings, even we are leaning towards a portable room AC now. As I said in the other thread, sleeping in the basement with all the spiders is not ideal.

* In fairness, what we do might work in the Dakotas, but not so well in Alabama.

We lived south of Portland for a few years back in the 80s, and I don't recall it ever got above 28C. Few homes or stores had AC, except for supermarkets and theaters. I do remember some lady in a shop when it had reached 28C fanning herself and commenting on "the heat." Amusing for us, a family arrived from the great plains. When we heard about the PNW heat wave in 2021, it seemed apocalyptic to have plus-40 temps up there.

Just going by the records it did get to 41 C in 1981. That's unusual of course. It's happens but the real change I suppose is how frequently higher averages now occur.

Home ac is rare here in Seattle as well. It's mainly because the hot days are few in number. It doesn't feel as bad as east coast heat (I grew up in eastern NC) but we aren't, as a region, that prepared for extended hot days over 32 C.

I have a small house and it's easy enough to get a portable ac and not suffer when the sun is out so I have always had some ac, either portable or window unit. I just got tired of hot weather from living in NC so I just don't want to put up with it.

Summer is the best time in Seattle so I make sure it's enjoyable. Often a summer where it's too cool is the problem, not the heat.
 
imho: Air conditioning is a grossly overused trap which should best be avoided when unnecessary.
I was disappointing when the University of Iowa built a new building with no operable windows: ergo exclusively relying on mechanical heating and cooling. Ok, so it is cheaper and easier to seal fenestrations that do not open; but lame nonetheless.

46 years ago my beloved spouse and I bought an old chicago 3 flat(3 stories) brick building on a tree lined street in, what was once the town of Holstein, in Chicago's near west side. Built around 1890-1910, the building had high ceilings and tall double hung windows that topped out about 6 inches from the ceiling. Seemingly not recognizing that architectural gem, previous owners/residents, had painted the upper sash shut and the ropes and pullies had not repaired and/or cut off.
The original design allowed lowering the upper window to allow the hot air to escape to the outdoors and join the urban heat island/envelope. And, was not being used! (gee darn). In the hot months, closing the east facing windows in the morning and the west ones in the afternoon and keeping the upper sash down at least 8 - 12 inches, and all open at night, the house was quite comfortable without the need for air conditioning.
Smart architecture makes mechanical corrections unnecessary by design.

It helps for sure. It's easier for me in a house to keep from needing a/c most of the time by keeping the blinds closed or mostly closed, when facing the sun. I open up the back door at night for a while to let cooler night air in and you can also use a window fan to help with that.

With several days of near 90 F weather and it's just not enough. However, in Seattle, it's doable.

For all the people living in multistory apartment buildings with a central hall and therefore no cross ventilation, it's miserable from day one and little they can do about it other than limiting direct sun and just buying a portable ac, or suffering.

When they make windows so you can't open them it's because (in addition to cost) you can't efficiently heat or cool a building if people are randomly opening windows.

Often just keeping windows closed during the day makes the situation a lot better but many don't do that. The kind of heat people have in various parts of the country varies significantly as well.

Hot and high humidity is hard to handle. That same temp in Phoenix might not be a problem but in Phoenix the temp eventually just gets to extremes. I do appreciate the architectural attempts made for natural cooling in Phoenix, especially north of the city at higher elevations.

That includes tall ceilings, vent windows near the ceiling, ceiling fans, small or no north facing windows. Shaded balconies to the north with spritzer systems to add mist to the local air.

Past a certain temp it still requires ac so for cheaper cookie cutter communities they just use standard residential "box style" houses and ac.

The UK is similar to Seattle. You can gut it out. In Houston you can't (easily) just gut it out, for example. People did at one time of course but it wasn't pleasant.

My grandmother lived out in a rural area on a farm and she never did have ac. I had an uncle in SC who didn't get ac until I was about 8 and we visited for a week every summer. It was rough.
 
Here in San Diego we can live without A/C for most of the year. Ten years ago we could go entire summers without it. Now we need it maybe 2 weeks a year.

Although this year we've already used it for a week and it isn't even August yet. We'll see how this summer goes.

29 (85 F) is around our nightly low these days. Our high is currently around 40 (105 F) here in Ft Worth. AC is very common around here. On the flipside, winters have been very mild the last few years.

Also, the highs of dry desert states are no comparison to what the summers of humid states feel like at the same temps. Many a film or television crew and cast accustomed to the former have complained bitterly about having to shoot on location in the latter (during that time of year).
