The Post Whatever Thread

They used to be a source of terror for my mother when she was a little girl. It was when they cut out that you started praying.
Some years back I worked with a woman who had lived in Britain during WW2. Can't recall what prompted her to describe life during the Blitz one day, but she pointed out that same characteristic of the V-1 attacks.

Those pink jobbies , however, are a source of terror for Russian armaments factories & oil refineries.

Gosh I thought the picture was a V1! Are these a Ukranian cruise missile that just happens to look exactly like the V1? What is it called?

I watch the Super League when I can, but am more a Union man... both proper sports, for sure.
Union is an equally great game at the representative level. I watch International RU games when they are on. Our Wallabies are currently in a rebuilding phase. Not quite as fast as RL, but just as tough and stirring.

Time marches on, life moves on, science moves on. Those that cling to the past or even the present will be left behind.

To Quote Bob Dylan:
"You better start swimming or you'll sink like a stone, for the times they are a'changing"

Sovereignty

(Preface aside: Oh, the risks of trying to make a stupid point. I went looking for one thing, and found another.)

This week, a man stabbed four to death in an otherwise pretty little corner of our region; a sheriff's deputy shot and killed Aleksandr Shablykin on Tuesday after a domestic dispute in violation of a protection order escalated to murder.

On Friday, KOMO News obtained video from a 2022 traffic stop involving Shablykin and Gig Harbor police.

During the stop, Shablykin claimed he was "traveling" in the car rather than driving and objected to the authority of police to stop him. Such claims are frequently associated with the sovereign citizen movement.

「"I have paperwork and documents notarized and thumb printed that I am no longer a person or a human," Shablykin told officers during the traffic stop. "I am operating under land and soil jurisdiction as a living man ... I don't answer to a corporation. The United States is a federal corporation, so as long as you are working for a corporation and you are harassing me."」

Gig Harbor officers ordered Shablykin not to drive the car. The video ends with Shablykin telling officers, "Thanks for stopping by."

Court records show he had several other encounters with police in recent years for traffic violations, including driving without insurance and driving with a suspended license.

There is a complicated discussion to be had about [(something, something, never mind)], but that's always tricky enough as it is; I was not expecting to find a sovereign citizen argument.

And now I have another complicated question. Actually, it's kind of straightforward, but explaining it can be difficult: ¿What is it with cops showing extraordinary patience with sovereign citizen nonsense?

Seriously, it's weird; iykyk. A dysfunctional doctrine asserting to defy any pretense of state authority, the sovereign citizen long associated with white supremacism, both militias and lone wolves alike, and world-government conspiracy theorists, but is also an essential component in a weird story involving highway patrol, black men with long guns, and nobody getting shot¹.

And maybe once upon a time people thought it was harmless, like crackpots with cardboard license plates, but then a couple of those jokers went and blew up a federal building in Oklahoma. And while sovereign citizens are viewed as a significant security threat, it's easy enough to underestimate them, as reminded in Pierce County.

「The post on Miyakawa mostly reminds of historical and literary analysis, but also makes the point that, yes, we can even talk about the Butt Naked Booty Bless. And, actually, in the time since I posted that one, it became weirdly relevant; I don't know who all heard about the weird incident in Massachusetts a few weeks ago when police encountered a bunch of Black men with rifles↱ in an oddball traffic incident, and nobody died. Long story short, they're Moorish sovereignists, and that's its own story, but their history precedes NGE and NOI, a Moorish movement that is part of the heritage leading to Miyakawa's subject matter, actually briefly sketched in the first chapter. And it would have been easy enough to miss the Moorish sovereignty bit without having taken a few minutes, at least, trying to figure out what's going on in some music I listen to.」

Played both. I kept it up after Uni but club opportunity went a bit thin when I had a kid and moved. Probably good I stopped when I did, rather than injury forcing me to stop.

I think I was working when we played the 2005 cup final, Johnny Wilkinson drop goal. They had a TV in the canteen, I watched 911 unfold on that TV too.

I played until I done both my knees in, but only RL. Played in the ESDJRLF COMP (Eastern Suburbs District Junior Rugby League Football) Lucky enough to have played against a couple of Australian reps. Eastern Suburbs are known as the Roosters, hence my handle.

To paraphrase Ben Franklin: Those who choose peace, security, and safety over freedom, deserve neither peace, security, and safety or freedom.
And I'll post here what I also posted in the other thread you "paraphrased" him:

For someone who seems to value "true understanding", you really should learn to use his actual quote, rather than paraphrase incorrectly.
"Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
- Benjamin Franklin, in the Pennsylvania Assembly’s “Reply to the Governor,” November 11, 1755

Note the rather important difference that the qualifiers he actually used give to what he is saying. He was not advocating that no freedom should be traded for peace/security, but that essential freedoms should not be traded for a little temporary safety.

Even to him the context and the balance of the trade mattered. He might have different views to others as to what was an essential freedom, but he was not advocating what you incorrectly paraphrased his quote to suggest he was.

I hope you are wise enough to recognise what the teacher has taught you here. ;)

First a quote:
"I've learned my lessons well. You can't please everybody, but you really have to please yourself."

Then an addition:
You can't please everybody, but you can tell them to go to hell.

The short form:
Hooray for me, F___ you,

The world may not owe me a living, but it owes me a quick and painless death, at a time of my choosing, with the drugs I need.
The world owes you exactly nothing. If you want something, figure out how to go and get it. And lobby for others to gain those hemlock rights, as well. I do support a right to assisted suicide for terminal patients. Patients in DC, California, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington presently have that right.

I wish you had to live my life. Your attitude on most everything would change. All you lefties claim to care and be compassionate, but when the tire meets the road you are all proven to be hypocrites.

You will not ever know or believe I care about you all more than you ever will care about me.

All I see with regards to yourself, is a thoughtless contrarian, with that extreme right wing "fuck you Jack, I'm alright" mentality.
