I hope the majority on this site will agree that the most powerful man in the world must be scientifically literate and not unduly swayed by the Christian lobby. Otherwise, the whole world may face catastrophic consequences. That is when the hard-line Christians will tell us the end is nigh, just as it says in the Bible.

I would agree that the next President should be scientifically literate.

Scientists can be Christians, or did you know that already?

I know very well. I referred to hard-line Christians , meaning all the bigots out there. I don't think you'll find any scientists among them.
By the way, I don't regard Intelligent Design as a science.

Hi Folks,

May I ask those of you who haven't voted to please do so.

Thanks,

Myles

What is scientifically literate defined as? Not letting religion get in the way, like with Bush?

That's it exactly. Being a scientist is not a pre-requisite; having an informed person's understanding of science is

but its never gonna happen - if u wanna become a congressman what do you do? politics at uni - not science

Are you saying that there are no politicians who understand issues such as climate change, stem cells and energy to name a few ? There is no requirement to be a scientist; an open mind and a willingness to learn are all that is required.I regard someone as scientfically literate if he has enough knowledge of science to understand where scientists are coming from. Someone who knows the world wasn't made in six days and who understands why creationism is nonsense would be the sort of person required.

oh, well i'm pretty sure most politicians are happy to hear anything professionals have got to say.

i can't really think of any English major players that have totally ignored advice before.

I am a citizen of the UK as I think you know. But as decisions made by the president of the US have global implications I am concerned about who is elected. I would vote for a scientifically literate person given he also had the other qualities one expects of a statesman.

and that is the key point that sinks or swims any political advocate (unless you want to argue that science is inherently political)

if a person has the qualities of a statesman, then they are qualified as a statesman

trying to play something else as the wild card is simply another chapter of poltical BS to fool people

]To be honest , I don't wish to spend much time talking to you because I know something of your track record which includes an inability to understand a straifghtforward statement. I've been waiting about a week now for your "proof" that Plato was not a pantheist, despite my having given you references to his works which clearly show that he was.

What you have written above is a good example of how you misinterpret what is said and then try to score points. I have done no more than suggest that the next president must be scientifically literate. Must one always spell out the obvious just for you ? That a president must be a statesman is self -evident. Have I said otherwise ?

Please note that I shall ignore any further posts you make on this thread.
