Due to Launch next month.

To be launched by space X, formerly a spy satellite,
it is an NIR space telescope, "mother to the HST" to keep Euclid (ESA) and JWST company at L2.

"The Roman Space Telescope is based on an existing 2.4 m (7.9 ft) wide field of view primary mirror donated by the National Reconnaissance Office and will carry two scientific instruments. The Wide-Field Instrument (WFI) is a 300.8-megapixel multi-band visible and near-infrared camera, providing a sharpness of images comparable to that achieved by the Hubble Space Telescope over a 0.28 square degree field of view, 100 times larger than imaging cameras on the Hubble. The Coronagraph Instrument (CGI) is a high-contrast, small field of view camera and spectrometer covering visible and near-infrared wavelengths using novel starlight-suppression technology."

What is meant by “formally a spy satellite”? There doesn’t seem to be anything about that in the Wiki write-up.

Ah so formerly, not formally. As in repurposed from a former spy satellite. OK, got it now. But how curious that a spy satellite can be adapted to such a different job.
 
I confess, seeing thread title, that my mind flashed on the American tv personality and legal analyst Nancy Grace, and wondered what a Roman telescope was and why anyone would name such a device after her.

Anyway, its goals seem ambitious. "...search for extra-solar planets using gravitational microlensing along with probing the chronology of the universe and growth of cosmic structure, with the end goal of measuring the effects of dark energy, the consistency of general relativity, and the curvature of spacetime."

We certainly need more data collection on the whole dark energy question.
