The Most (And Least) Hated States, According To Its Neighbors And People Who Live There
https://www.zippia.com/advice/most-hated-states/

EXCERPT: We looked at 3 metrics to determine which states are the most hateable: The percent of residents who say the state is the “worst possible state to live in” ..... The states with the biggest decrease in population ... Nationwide, the number of other states who say they hate a state the most (MORE - details)
- - - - - - - - -

The least hated states ranged from #1 Colorado to #10 Arizona. Alaska might be a surprise in that group, given how much everything supposedly costs there due to remoteness, though the scenery probably counteracts.

Most hated

1. Illinois

2. New Jersey

3. New York

4. West Virginia

5. California

6. Massachusetts

7. Michigan

9. Connecticut

10. Kentucky

I think states like Alaska and Minnesota are kind of self-selecting for the most loved because you really have to love those places to stay there for more than one winter. Colorado makes sense as the winner because it has something for everybody, with mild winters in the southern plains part, but also appealing wintry venues for skiing and mountain scenery, and a good cultural/pace of life range from remote rural to cosmopolitan urban to funky college town. And I'm sounding like a CofC promo....but really, it's a nice state.

For me, the most hated state is the morning after a heavy night, when you wake up, dehydrated, head pounding, stomach not quite sure what it wants to do... but I'm not sure that's quite what you're referring to. ;)

We're not an alcohol centric country:)

It's an odd concept/list. It doesn't really matter what other states "hate' a state. It barely even makes sense.

The self-hate aspect is interesting but the poll doesn't seem to provide enough info to be useful. Why do you hate your state? Weather, politics, cost of living, corruption, economy?

Of what interest/use is this poll to anyone?

Where in the world did I get Alaska being among the most liked? Must have been glancing at Zippia's counterpart list in a parallel universe or something.

Meh. Apparently conflated such with the remark that "77% of Alaskans have pride in their state, more than any other state."

I would have expected Texas to be in the top 10 hated states. It seemed to be dull and interminable countryside, a lousy climate and boring, soulless cities. And my God, the people!

Give me Massachusetts any day. But then I'm European and felt relatively at home there.

Connected to the reason for dropping it in "Free Thoughts" rather than whatever would suffice as a poll, survey, or statistics subforum in here. It's indeed not much more than a conversation bauble, like "What's your favorite sports team and most disliked one?"

That's insane. It's a lovely state. What is wrong with people? Sometimes wonder if such surveys skew towards the chronically disgruntled personality type.
Perhaps it's more beautiful to visit than to live in?

Because, as TheVat points out:
1. you prolly gotta love it to live there
2. it doesn't have any (American) neighbours to hate it (which is one of the criteria).

It's interesting. I'm not discounting why you would do it. I was just wondering why they would do it.:) California as a bad place seems a bit overdone:)

Texas must be slipping:)

Which Alaska would fully fit the bill for visitors, even if it's tops for the majority of its residents taking pride in it. ("Hey, look at what we can endure. We've got a a skillset to crow about!")

Three years, in my early teens, then back a couple times in later life. Vibrant culture, friendly people, wide range of natural beauty from the Cape to the Berkshires, superb restaurants at all pricing tiers, stellar educational opportunities, pretty Italian-American girls who made my 14 year old knees go weak, amazing museums, magnificent and well-preserved residential architecture, cool sylvan areas in almost every town and city, a deep sense of history which puts brakes on just razing everything and replacing with Brutalist cubes of cement.... I could go on.

I got scrod at Legal Seafoods! Go Red Sox!

But no. Stopping now.

They are told to hate it so they hate it, and that is reinforced via social media.

I've never been to any state I hated. Florida? Hate the weather, beaches are nice though and the diving is great. Louisiana? The swamps and forests are amazing. Alaska? Beautiful country and a huge amount of untouched wilderness. Massachusetts? Horrible drivers but great food, great schools, beautiful in spring and fall and fun in winter.

Probably largely for the city at the very bottom of the state rather for the state as a whole, right?
Yeah. Like many others places, it was part of my childhood. Books, magazines, TV, music and film but so much more than any other city however.
The birth place of Buddy Rich, Richard Feynman, Leonard Susskind and Blondie.

I grew up in eastern NC but twice during my high school years I got the chance to go to Manhattan with some members of my journalism class for a few days. When I first arrived, by bus, it felt like arriving on a movie set.

Look at a map of New York state though and NYC is just a sliver of land at the south east corner. I've got a great CD of Buddy Rich.

Which CD is it?
In all honesty I don't think I will ever go. I am not motivated to fly anywhere, perhaps by sea one day?
Anyway yes, I feel connected to the city, always have. Being a drum nut and Buddy being the greatest drummer of all time, he just had to be from New York.
Leonard Susskind's lectures on Quantum Mechanics on line got me hooked on physics, one of the things anyway.
The first book I read on physics was "The first 3 minutes," Weinberg was a New Yorker too.
The film I have watched more than any other in my life is "The Warriors," I was obsessed with it as a kid (early 20s)
I do not like it because it is set in New York but it is set in New York, where else!?
I do not think I would like Texas, probably get measles.
