If the holadeck (i think that's how you spell it) was real, how would it work?

How would we be able to touch and feel, as they do in star trek?

Does anybody think that kind of fictional technology could ever become real?

Does anybody think it may be possible to create a "replicator", you know, the one where somebody goes up and says " earl grey tea with english muffins, computer?

Aloha:D The holodeck operates by using holograms for visual feedback, and use a combination of the replicator technology and force fields to provide the rest. The teleporters and the replicators use the same principles in thier operation, except that rather than teleporting something, a replicator uses rearranges stored matter to create "earl grey tea with english muffins." There's work being done on a teleporter, though I doubt they'll be able to make it work on a human.
 
It is mentioned in the series several times that the visions of the holodeck are not real and have no substance.
 
In one of the early episodes, Dr. Crusher's son(can't remember his name) went in, fell in a river, and stayed wet when he left the deck. Always thought that was funny.

I think that the holodeck used very fast photons to create semi-solid objects. That way you could drink water, or dance with an holographic human, etc. I don't know where that explanation came from, but there it is.

They had episodes where the safeties went off and then the holograms became more solid than usual, so people could be killed by holographic bullets or holographic knives. But, maybe that was the replicator technology or force fields as Gifted said, and not the "fast photons" like I said above :).

Anyway, on the holodeck I think you'd feel everything because of the forcefields, though I don't see how they'd create different textures.

With the replicators, it's simply moving the molecules in the air around to make other things. Teleporters as portrayed on ST are pretty much impossible right now, and I don't see how it could ever be done. You'd have to stand perfectly still in order for the computer to calculate where every atom is while it's dissembling you, and I mean perfectly, as in not moving at all. And how did they rematerialize on a planet's surface if there is no transporter unit down there to put you back together?

And uh, I don't think the 'fast photon' idea works. Photons travel at the speed of light, which is the speed limit for this universe (or appears to be). And if they were travelling through air that would slow them down a little, not speed them up =)
 
My question is how does it create an environment that's so much bigger than the actuall deck? If you walk in without running a program you can see it's just a room. I understand it's a hologram. but if you have two people in the deck and they turn and walk away from each other are they actually moving away from each other? does the deck somehow keep them stationary while it seems like they may be far apart?

or if you created a holadeck program of a very large room could you fit in more real people than could actually fit inside the holadeck when it's not running a program?

An idea i have come up with, is that everything, including the enterprise fleet is a hologram.

What if, in the 25th century, the combination of neuro-scientists and computer geniuses create a scenario not different from "The Matrix".
This would make everything in star trek possible. Of course we can assume by then, the universe would be far more mapped out, so the programers would be able to write it into the programme, so everything would concur with history.

The actual programing would have to have already started, or start from now. The idea would be to get evrybody reliant on the internet. Eventually, with the progress of neuro-science, there would be a development of interactive programes.

Eventually, we would opt to work via interactive hook up, have sex, go clubbing. Everything would work the same way it does in the real world, but from the comfort of your armchair.

Options will be given for those who want to live in the cyber world, they may probably get some kind of introvenus gadget that feeds them basic nutritions to keep there bodies going. But everytime they felt hungry they could go into a cyber resteraunt, buy some lovely looking meal, eat and enjoy it, all in cyberspace, but in reality they would be getting chemical food.

Just some ideas. :)

Its funny, just think what was science fiction 100 years ago !

quantum entanglement has been achived already, a beam of light has been teleported across a bench, ok so its not very far but its a start, it would be nice to be around in another 100 years
 
The Holadeck

Would a Holodeck as medium between two regions be safer and more practical than a matrix type of connection?
I mean, with technoligy in your body you always risk tearing the skin from the metal. And such a thing is perminant (maybe not in the future, but it is now). I think it has been proven by now that you need a more bonding material than metal, and even if u get that, you risk, as said before, wanting to have it removed when it is not possible. Looking at the tattoo's 10 yrs ago, I think that is a realistic possibility...

Anyways, like I said before, I think a HoloDeck as a medium, instead of these PC's we have nowadays, would be a lot easier. You'll need sensors for the Holodeck anyways, so why not forward the information gained by those sensors. Curs, lag would look like a lot of fun, maybe cause some danger as well, but wouldn't that be a lot better?

Curs, you risk all out wars because nobody would really check what everybody is doing on their Holodeck when offline, I mean, killing the leader of a specific group would not fall that well to that specific group if found out. I mean, how would all Christians feel if a Jew would kill the Pope? just to name an example (so please don't feel offended by this. If you do, I hereby offer my sincere apoligies).

In both cases, i believe it would hinder the individual, as everything would be an elaborate illusion.
I saw an episode of "Voyerger", where captain Janeway fell in love with a holadeck character after she had changed some of its sub-routines to fit her ideal man.

The example of the holadeck shown in star trek, has nothing to do with institutionalised religion. I think by the time that technology becomes a reality there will be no christians or jews.

In the bible (rev.) it states that unless one pays alegiance to the beast by accepting its mark (hand or forehead), one will not be able to buy or sell, in modern society.

Thats what I'm curious about. When I was young, I just figured that it was like the Tardis, bigger on the inside than the outside, but there isnt any mention of warping space to create the environments in the holodeck, so if it is a combination of holograms and replicated items then how come people dont bump into walls?
I mean if you had only one person on the holodeck then the scenerery could "scroll" along when they walk or something, it would be like walking on a conveyor belt. You wouldnt actually move anywhere, but the environment would move around you.

But 2 or more people boggles me. What if you had dozens of people on the holodeck all at once like they sometimes did with Voyager?
Remember when the Hirogen captured Voyager? They kept expanding the holodecks, so there must be some restrictions on what you can do with a small holodeck, otherwise you could have one the size of a cupboard and Starfleet wouldnt bother making them the size of a garage. Maybe each person gets delegated their own holographic area by the computer when they start it up, kind of like a bubble, and each bubble contains the environment they are supposed to be in? So if 2 people are in the same part of the program, they share the same bubble, but if they walk in different directions, they get seperated into different bubbles that contain different parts of the environment.

Ah hell, just use Virtual Reality instead.
