The fesability of the halodeck?!

Erm Ships Log, Stardate Oh-My-God-There's-An-Entire-Website-Devoted-To-This,

This is a rubbish thread, you've even spelt it wrong, what kind of Star Wars* fan are you!!?

This is Captain James T. Kirk signing off, may the force be with you, good luck in your quest to lose your virginity, maybe you could even get someone to dress up in a Dark** Vader uniform,

Signed:

Lieutenant*** Spock

*Yes I know, everybody shut up before you even start, I don't give a rats ass, tell it to all the other geeks at your next fanclub meeting.

**Shut up again.

***And a 3rd time.

The holodeck idea could be achieved one day, but it would be much easier to create a realistic matrix style virtual reality. I believe that people could be connecting their brains to a virtual reality that is indistinguishable from the real world within the next fifty years. The research that you see in the links below is the first step towards creating a realistic virtual reality.

I think it would be much more difficult to create a holodeck. It is easy to create holograms, but I think we are more than a century away from creating the force fields that would hold the photons together to create a solid object. The force that we would use would be electromagnetism or gravity. Or perhaps a combination of both. We could see some kind of force field technology during this century, but it will definitely be used for military purposes before it is used for holodecks.

A real virtual reality could also be another option in the future. This reality could be created by self-replicating nanobots that would transform our reality at an atomic level. The nanobots would occupy a specific amount of space and they would use the molecules and atoms within that space to create the reality that you desire. This technology is also known as nano swarms or utility fog.

so,will it ever be achieved?
I think just about anything is possible if you have advanced enough knowledge and technology. Hell, I think a deck where we can all play Halo is very possible.

They're turning Halo into a card game now... ?

Or does it mean a virtual reality device in which one assumes the role of one of the cherubim or seraphim... or maybe a saint ?

I'll take Vitus...

*twitch, twitch*...

;)

I always thought the holodeck was ridiculous. If such a thing were availble, guys would spend all their time there having sex with supermodels! No work would get done. They sure as hell wouldn't waste time on pirate ships and robin hood adventures.

Holo addiction or virtual reality addiction will definitely be a problem for some people when or if these technologies are available. There are some people that would use the technology in an inappropriate way, but the smart people of the future would use the technology in a responsible way.

If I could connect myself to a realistic virtual reality I would use the AI that is built into it to assist me in the process of achieving the optimal chemical balance. When people hear the word pleasure the first thing that they usually think about is sex. There are many other forms of pleasure that would want to experience in a virtual reality. I would use VR to experience the same spiritual well being that religious individuals feel when they pray or meditate. I would also want to experience some misery and pain in VR. I would use it as a learning tool to prepare me for the struggles in the real world.

It would be very important for people to put a limit on the amount of pleasure that they are experiencing in VR because new or infrequent experiences will always be more pleasurable or exciting than frequent experiences. There is a reason why new experiences are more pleasurable than frequent experiences. There is a limit to how much dopamine or endorphins our body can produce. Narcotics usually increase the limit until the chemicals begin to damage the cells in our body. Getting everything that you want in a virtual world would also become boring after a while. Life is not fun without some challenges.

ahhh..that is why it most definitely wont be available cheaply to the masses for soooo long after it is created (i doubt it will be. computer simulations are a more promising idea).

we will see military application of that kind of technology before civilians even know it exists. mark my words.

Just like TV and the internet, you mean. :)

How long do people reckon it'll be before we'll be able to go anywhere in the universe just by thinking about it?

I reckon about 5 years.

nAH you are being far too optimistic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5.5 to 6 would be much more like it.

No - I've checked and rechecked my calculations. They are correct.
But did you remember to carry the 1 for your heisenberg compensator, tachyon drive surge and cream cake cherry spillage damper?
