The Economics of Baby Boomers

Hey there!

I wonder what you guys know about how the economy be affected as the baby boomers get old and retire. I read in a report from the Canadian government that there will be a decline on the number of people working, since they will retire. That means more jobs for me!

On the other side... the government will have to spend more money to pay for their retirement. That would probably mean higher taxes...

Is there anyway that we can avoid raising the taxes? Am I saying stupid things or what I'm saying is right...?

Unless Canada can attract those 300,000 immigrants per annum to make up the difference, then no. We are destined to pay for those stupid old baby boomers. Canada's pop. might actually decrease because our fertility rates are so horrid. On the up side Canadians will generally be paid more, and have more benefits. Also Canada is short of trades ppl, thus we need more immigrants and we have to get more students into the applied programs, so they can go to college instead of Uni. We are too smart for our own good.

Because Canadian tax dollars shouldn't pay for non-resident education. That's just odd, I feel it is a national shame that Universities are not free in Canada.

That's because US and Canada don't recognize the value of education. Education should be free. It is the basics of the system. The reason why education cost so high is too limit the access to it only for the rich. Than, we have a very rich population of a few people that only gets more and more money and lots of poor people that can't become rich because they don't have access to a better education. That's how capitalism creates modern slaves...

Paying taxes does not make you into residents of the country. You have no affiliation to the state. What type of taxes do you pay as well, income tax? You will leave Canada correct? You will take your expertise into Brazil correct? Then why should Canada pay for Brazil to have a competitive edge over it? Canada in the 90's lost 500,000 ppl due to the Brain Drain if anything we are trying to stop that.

Well I doubt you are poor, I mean you are from Brazil coming here to pay high tuition fee's so...it does seem a bit pretentious to me. If you aren't rich then do tell, and I will recant my statements. Obviously as the proletariat class we are in debt to the system, that is the economic benefits. The government makes money due to the interest on student loans, and banks as well, credit card companies make a killing on us. Also Canada doesn't need anymore scholars, what Canada needs now are ppl who will work in trades. Canadians due to the population drain will make more money, and thus tuitions will rise. I agree it is totally disgusting, but that's the sick system.

I'm not going back to Brasil. I'm not staying here forever, but I'm not going back there either. I have lived 17 years of my life there. This world is gigantic. I want to experience more of this planet. If I go back to Brasil and work there (that is, if I ever find work there in the first place!) I will never get enough money to go anywhere around the world. In fact, I will be lucky enough if I get enough money to survive there...!

Not only that, but we bring money from outside Canada, which in turn valorizes the Canadian money. In addition, we bring lots of experience, and in fact, going to live in a country in the other side of the world does give you lots of experience.

I'm very poor compared to a regular North American. I'm richer than a bum in North America, tough... While you earn in average $100,000 per year, we ,in Brasil, earn in average about $120 (all in dollars). Which means that my dad is expanding, with my education, all the money that he economised his entire life.

It is funny how we have to pay for people such as Gordon Campbell and the Governor General (which I don't even know the name) to have an easy life. While we pay our student loans, going to university and being on many part-time jobs, and starving to pay the bills.... Gordon Campbel goes to Hawaii and get drunk, the governor general spends millions travelling in Europe, old bastards from the US come here, buy our houses and rent them for us for huge amounts of money... etc....

As my Computer Science teacher says... (paraphrasing...)... "the secretary has an old and slow computer, which also deals with the requests of many others in the little network of a company. While the secretary suffers with the extremly slow and overused computer, the president has a brand new last-generation computer, which serves for nothing but collecting dust, and he spends his time playing games with it..."

And as my Astronomy teacher says... (paraphrasing...)... "the poor astronomer goes there and do all the work. He takes the spectra of the stars, he writes the reports and so on, while the other rich "astronomer" just gets the credit and money..."

So instead of going to Brazil to enrich your country with your know-how you are bitiching about the pay you would get there, yet you again complain about capitalism? If you really did care about socialism and making things better then you should go back to Brazil and contribute to Brazil's economy, or her space program. Brazil is on the verge of becoming a very serious economic player internationally, and is going to become the world's Granary. I have been to Brazil, and I know it has a lot of potential that is being wasted. You shouldn't (if you aren't a capitalist) even think twice.

So does a tourist from Germany, do they get a free ride? No, I have to pay my T4 income taxes now; I am a resident of this country. I am an immigrant as well from Uruguay, and I want to go back there to make things better, regardless of the costs.

While you earn in average $100,000 per year, we ,in Brasil, earn in average about $120 (all in dollars). Which means that my dad is expanding, with my education, all the money that he economised his entire life.

We earn what per annum? Canadians per capita make $29,000 per annum. Brazilians $7,600. Obviously most Brazilians make much less then that.

Brasil will get better by itelf. I don't really need to do that. i had conidered doing that, but there's a lot more than I want to do. Don't know how, but...

What? Are you serious? Take a look at the GPA. Does it seem any higher? That's because Japanese student are good at math. Do you knwo what that means? Better trained workers...?

Sorry. It's $1000 per year, not $120. But... $29000? Well... if you are right, than maybe some people earn a lot more... And you are right about brasilians earning much les than that. Some people there receive $27000 per month and they do basically nothing...
