The dumbing down of America

Yes that is very curious as dummy means an inert substitute or replica, e.g. tailor’s ~, baby’s ~, a dummy pass in rugby, etc.

I suppose dummy in the sense you mean would have originally been spelt “dumby”, i.e. one who is “dumb”.
Dummy indices in maths.

I don't find it to be "very curious" although "spelt" is curious from the US perspective.

"Gracie's pregnant."
Loved the movie, but couldn't quite make sense of the premise. All they need is a convincing whale call, saying "everything is fine, the squid are delicious," or whatever. Wouldn't a recording of a humpback have been sufficient? Of course then there's no need to travel back in time, meet pretty marine biologists, learn the colorful cursing of the 20th century, give away the secrets of transparent aluminum, etc.

"Everybody remember where we parked."

As the wife took me to see this on Tuesday i can answer the question - Spock says briefly, and I'm paraphrasing, they could use a recording, but they don't know the question being asked or what answer they were giving - the would in essence be talking gibberish.

My favorite trek film..
