On the path of life, should we be thankful for every step that makes us who we are? Both joy and suffering in life serves a purpose, does it not?

No, I don’t think so.

Firstly, for many people, some of the steps in their lives that have formed them have had a negative influence and are not something to be thankful for. For example, a former friend of mine became an alcoholic as a result of the hard-drinking culture of his city job, which destroyed his marriage and eventually his employability. He ended up losing his mind, looked like a tramp - and died last year, alone. The body was not found for a fortnight. So I think it is a bit complacent and Pollyanna-ish to imagine that every step is something to be thankful for. For those of us that have ended up comfortable, or fulfilled in some way, maybe yes, but that is not the lot of everyone.

Secondly, while certain steps in life undoubtedly have a result, it seems to me something of a teleological fallacy to attribute purpose to them. Whose purpose?

I agree with exchemist There is a phrase that goes, "What does not kill us makes us stronger."
Suffering, real suffering can damage a person for life and make life very difficult. Relationships, marriage and career.
I have had some health near misses recently, very lucky and god bless the NHS, it works.
I do not feel stronger I feel like I need to keep an eye on things as I age.
My friend had a hit and died at 46, she deserved much more.
None of that served any purpose besides leaving a child motherless and breaking her mother's heart, who died not long after.
Life is not all positive and certainly has no purpose, unless you think Diabetes followed by kidney failure, transplant followed by Epstein Barr virus induced cancer has a purpose.
12 months of misery, fear and agony in places followed by death at 48.

Don't be silly. No one on the site is bigoted against Russia. Read the threads on Trump, including comments from Americans!

Exchemist is a seasoned gentleman. I'm not.
You requesting everyone translate your texts (like I'm doing now) is a pain in the arse.
Russia is not the issue, translation is the issue.
We are KINDLY continuing to do that Olga.

I don't like putting people on ignore as it disrupts the flow of the thread. But having to translate every other post is disrupting too.
Not to mention that I'm starting to get pop-up ads in Russian. Ignore may be in the cards for Olga.

I thought about that but I think she deserves a little more investment.
She is starting to curve ball to the side of troll. I'm going with it but if I see no improvement then ignore it is.

Where did you see trolling? I don't do that. Maybe it's translation difficulties.
To-date you have been remarkably polite and even-tempered; it is why I have enjoyed engaging with you. The above is the second hostile post, just today. Not a biggie, just noticeable - and only by contrast to your usual temperament.
