The worst thing I've got right now is the cigs., then cola. You may remember me saying in the past that I have done a lot of cocaine, pot, drinking, some meth and/or speed, and a few other things like valium and oxycontin, etc. All those were a breeze to quit compared to the cigs. I've just about given up on giving up the cigs. And I hate that.

ive tried weed several times even though im only 14, and it smells good, but it doesent taste like anyhting, i htink non menthol and menthol alike taste better then weed, it smells good though, but of all the itmes i nthe past 2 months ive tried it, 2 or 3 times, ive never felt the urge to pay 10 dollers ofr al ittle itty bit of it speed and meth is bad for you, my dad tole me to stay away from the chemicals

riku, I know a lot of people are gonna come down hard on me for saying this, but quit the pot now man. it's really not worth it. it leads, eventually, to the other drugs. if you are like me at all. quit the cigs too. trust me. they all suck big dick later on. quit while your young, while you have fewer worries, while it's easier to quit. find something else to take their place and if someone gives you shit because you are quitting, tell them to fuck off and don't talk to them again until they wise up, if ever.

Couple of questions;

Do you still get a buzz from a cigarette?

Do you smoke because it's a habit?

Do you smoke to stay thin?

Do you think smoke smells good on clothes and in the air?

Why exactly do you smoke? Or is it just a matter of why stop? Do you enjoy spending $4-8 bucks a pack on cigarettes?

A few reasons to quit;
the $784 you'd save if you smoked a half a pack a day, and the $1568 you'd save if you smoke a pack a day.
So you won't be dragging your oxygen tank to your family members funerals
Because there is no good positive reason to smoke. (I don't drink either, btw.)

I enjoy it! That warm, full feeling in my lungs, and the taste of my favorite Virginian tobacco mingling playfully with my Colombian coffee. I'm wealthy, but would prefer it not be taxed so heavily.

I've suffered no adverse health effects so far, and have had to endure the hate speech, curtailed public liberties, over-taxation, and idiotic rhetoric of various anti-smoking loons.

Is giving up smoking worth one week's pay for a luxury I enjoy all year?

Nope.

...

When I don't enjoy it anymore, I'll quit. I quit drinking alcohol at age 21, and quit drugs altogether while in college... nicotine and caffeine are no different.

At $1.53 a pack and 1 1/2 packs a day, I could save $837.68 a year if I quit. Too Bad I'm Addicted! AND Presently Weak!
So you won't be dragging your oxygen tank to your family members funerals
Great reason.

I live in west Texas, and I smoke Berkley Menthol by the carton ($15.36 a carton at The Smoke Shop). Some people think that smoking acts as an appetite suppressant, but I don't really. Not for me anyway.

When I first started smoking (which was in my senior year at college), I started with a pipe. I'd always loved the smell of pipe tobacco. Plus, I thought it would be cool. One weekend, I ran out of tobacco for it and couldn't leave post to go get more. After only about 6 months, I was already craving the buzz, the dizzy sensation. I was already in the early stages of addiction, though I didn't know that then. So, I bum a cig off of a friend. Then another. Then I got hooked on the cigs. (So much easier to smoke a cig. than the pipe)

A couple years pass. The buzz is no longer there. Now, it's just habit. However, I keep telling myself that I can quit anytime I want. At this point, I am still strong and probably could have quit. Instead of the buzz, the cigs. are just a little comfort blanket, so to say. I'm still running 10 minute 2-miles even. Smoking doesn't seem to be affecting me. Not me. I'm strong.

A couple more years pass. I'm in Somalia with the army and the post exchange runs out of all regular flavor cigs. (marlboro, camel, winston, all of them) All they have are menthols. I get those and get hooked on them. They were novel to me, guaranteed to keep my interest for at least another few years. Really good with a piece of menthol candy in your mouth at the same time. COLD.

A few more years. At 27 I meet a french girl. She turns me onto pot. At 28, I start cocaine with a friend at work. At 29, I'm in rehab. No money. No car. No french girlfriend. No strength. No more bright future. I end up quitting the pot and coke and booze, but not the cigs.

Finally, I'm here at 36. The years have been hard on me. My willpower and confidence are not what they used to be. I am no longer Strong. I wake up coughing. Hacking. Spitting. My chest always hurts. The thought of running 2 miles at one go makes me cringe.

I...can't...quit...smoking...even...though...it...is...killing...me.

P.S. Don't be cool.

Smoking ages the skin, hair and nails of people who are long time smokers. At 30, you may look 40... at 60, you may look 80. It does this by restricting blood flow to places in your skin that need a healthy blood flow. Your skin starts to harden, and wrinkle in unnatural ways that only cosmetic surgery, collagen and botox can fix. It ages the organs in the same way, your lungs, liver, stomach, heart... they aren't getting the blood flow and oxygen they need to replace themselves either. And only surgery, transplants and bypasses are going to fix that as well.

I smoked, from the time I was 14 until I was about 23 and decided that I wanted to have a child. Prior to getting pregnant, I quit. I knew the risks and decided that it wasn't worth it for my child to have low birth rates, higher incidents of asthma and other allergies and under-developed organs. Funny thing was that I didn't consider the risk to my own health, I just thought of the risk of someone else. Part of the problem too, is that we lack the ability to take care of ourselves. We don't weigh the risks and unhealthy factors when making choices in our lives. That's why we have so many smokers, drinkers, drug-users, obese people, and other such preventable problems. All of these things can kill us, but we don't seem to factor those things in. I'm not sure why we don't, whether it's a feeling of immortality or just a lack of self-esteem but there has to be something that drives us towards bad habits. It may even be different for different people. I know a guy who can't help but eat, regardless of his high blood pressure, diabetes, bad back and other weight related problems. He's not sure what's caused it, but if you put food near him he can't help but eat it.

It's sad that we can't treat these peoples illness. Addiction is an illness, as is not being able to take care of yourself. Anything in excess, is bad. Even over exercising or over-dieting can be an addiction and can kill you. The ready supply of goods and services makes this problem worse. Fast food, an over abundance of cars, a liquor store on every corner... Gone are the days where tobacco was produced in small quantities and was harder to get, where people walked to work and school or took the bus for long distances. We don't cook our food from scratch anymore either, we get take out or buy pre-packaged foods with their high levels of chemicals, and easy methods of cooking. Back in the good old days, Grandma used to make a loaf of bread that was just devine... but she spent more calories making the bread than she did eating the piece or two from the loaf. People are lazy, and consumerism is the reason for this laziness. It's become too easy to consume goods at a high rate, and too hard to work for it. We have machines, and chemicals to replace hard work and healthy foods. We go for convenience rather than making the right choices.

All the logic has been taken out of our lives. We no longer know why we do the things we do, and can't explain any of it with any kind of rationality. What we do know is that it's harder to fix the problem than it is to ignore it. So we keep going along our merry way, no matter how stupid it looks.

Cottontop,

You are a smart guy, you know you should quit for yourself. You need a little self-worth, and self-recognition. I can't help you quit smoking, but you can. Just think about what you are doing to yourself, and start seeing the things in yourself that other people admire about you. Fuck the past and whatever you've done... you can deal with that when you are healthy in your mind, heart and body. Right now, just focus on all of your good points and go from there. As for the running two-miles thing... you know you can do it, you did it in the military. You can do it again, you just have to start with going down the block and back, then a few feet further each day until you can make it around the block. Keep going and eventually you'll be running two miles a day and wondering why you didn't do it sooner. You have so many reasons to do it, and you want to do it... you just have to know you are worth it for you and no one else.

Speaking of smoking - I have wondered why, if tobacco smoke is addictive, I have never heard of anybody who is exposed to second hand smoke ever craving a cigarette.

Kotoko, thanks. Maybe someday I'll find a good enough reason to quit. Right now, I don't have that reason.

It's not the smoke that is addictive, it's the nicotine. Nicotine is not in second hand smoke in anything but very tiny trace elements if at all.

Cotton,
You have the reason, you just don't realize it. I see it plain as day.

Didn't work. Neither did cutting back, nor setting a quit date, nor going to counselling, nor Zyban or Wellbutrin, nor lemon drops, nor the patch or gum. They are just tools, and without a good enough reason to really want to quit, they are worthless tools. Thanks though. :)

My brother quit smoking about 4-5 years ago... he's been chewing the gum ever since and it's more expensive than his cigarettes were.

My mother quit on Zyban and a heart attack. My father quit because my son told him that he smelled bad and didn't want to give him a hug. It depends on the person.

P.S. Cottontop, I did tell you in my first post.

When I said great reason, I was thinking more in terms of riku. For me, I think I will go well before most of my remaining family. I've accepted that. I'm so selfish that my family is not a good enough reason, I guess. It does scare me to think of having to go on oxygen, but I think I will end it all when something like that is required. Sorry. Got another reason?

Nope .... 'fraid not. According to what I have been able to find out, there is twice as much nicotine in secondary smoke as there is in inhaled smoke. See this site, for example:
