The Earth has been hit by astroids/comets before causing much damage to the biosphere. Mabye humans are a attempt by the biosphere to adapt to the environmental pressures of celestial bodies striking the Earth. What better way to do that than by the biosphere, via humans coincidentaly, to become aware of the space in which these hazards lurk. Mabye in becoming aware of space and the solar system, and Earths position in it, the biosphere has, using humans, attempted to innoculate itself from future damage. Mabye humans are the biosphere's immune system. Sickle cell anemia harms the carrier, but it provides a defense against malaria, humans harm the biosphere, but potentialy provide a defense against celestial objects. Mabye natural selection is fractal and it patterns encompass and are encompassed by adapting to the environment. Since all the componants of the bioshere share the same ultimate goal provided by DNA, one could easily use the same template of adaption one uses for individual species. Some species get lucky and mutation proves useful for survival. Some do not and go extinct. Mabye some biospheres get lucky-HUMANS -and survive and some biosheres do not and are destroyed by what has to be the inevitable strike from a celestial object.
But on a universal level are we destined to make way for future life by being eradicated by a big chunk of rock travelling straight towards us at thousands of miles per hour?
