Should Elon Musk be booted out the Royal Society?

A mad loose cannon is how I would describe him.
The bottom line is that he is streets ahead of the shambolic NASA in terms of space flight.
He is a risk taker, a maverick but that is what is needed when you have stale space flight program.

Incredible what he has achieved.

Hopefully he won't kill anyone, I would like to think he has learned from Oceangate, there is a time to be a maverick and a time to listen to your engineers.
It is not as though NASA kept everyone safe but hopefully Musk will do all he can to avoid an Apollo 1, Challenger and Columbia.

There are other ways people die..
Considering what Thrump base supporters would believe, I think Elon should be very mindful of what he says on X and other media open to the public...
Under Covid lockdown, there was Musk with his Twitter post "Free America Now"
Leave it to the medical advisers or has Elon medical qualifications too?

I'm not on twitter/x but I have heard a lot of bad things.

It looks like there's a stirring in the Royal Society with a meeting next month about Elon's membership there.

Royal Society will meet amid campaign to revoke Elon Musk’s fellowship

The Royal Society in London has called a meeting to discuss the behaviour of fellows following a growing campaign by scientists over the membership of Elon Musk. The 3 March meeting comes after more than 1,300 scientists signed an open letter expressing “deep concerns” about the conduct of billionaire Musk, who is a fellow.

Musk is working closely with US President Donald Trump on sweeping government reforms that threaten flagship US research programmes and are causing havoc to scientists in the United States and globally. He is also accused of spreading misinformation on the social media site X, which he owns.

An open letter to the President of the Royal Society – time to stand up for your values

Earlier today, I sent the letter below to Professor Adrian Smith, President of the Royal Society.
The letter expresses my deep concerns at the ongoing failure of the Royal Society to recognise that Elon Musk FRS has acted in contravention of its own code of conduct.
Further, in view of the continuing assault of the Trump administration on the conduct of science in the USA, in which Musk has a leading role as head of the Dept of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the Society’s inaction has tarnished its reputation. It calls into question its commitment to its values, not least diversity and inclusion, and its fitness to speak on behalf of the UK scientific community.
It is my sincere hope that the Royal Society will find the resolve to stand up publicly for what it claims to believe in.

Hooray, I think they will revoke his membership. They have ample grounds, purely on the damage he is doing to the practice of science in the USA and the lies, sorry, “misinformation” he spreads, which is objectively scandalous behaviour. There is no need for them to get into contentious politics or DEI crap.

It’s a small gesture, but important for the continued prestige of the Royal Society that they revoke his membership. If they don’t, a lot of eminent scientists will resign and the damage to the Society will be lasting.

I am a pragmatist. Haber went from fertilizer to mustard gas, we do not throw out the fertilizer with the mustard gas.

Haber was a patriot, "I am a scientist, I belong to the world, during war time I belong to my country." (Para)

Now, Musk .....a bit of a nut job by all accounts. I think we should think before comparing him to a Nazi.
You wrote this before the Nazi salute and before his endorsement of the AfD. But now, we have thought, and we have observed.

Yes. I have changed my mind, a lot. Observe, evidence and conclusion. DOGE and a deep there would have been enough.

Truly shocking regarding all the other stuff. Disgusting and an example of not learning from history.

Why? Werner von Braun did even more for space travel than Musk did - but he was certainly a Nazi.
Yes my comment did not age well. In my defence I was watching his rockets not his political comments closely.

I was wrong to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Als Musk uit de Royal Society wordt gezet, welke vorm van wraak zal hij dan nemen?
Zal Elon ervoor zorgen dat Trump op Charles leunt om de ‘Koninklijke’ titel af te pakken?

If Musk is expelled from the Royal Society, what form of revenge will he take?
Will Elon ask Trump to lean on Charles to take the ‘Royal’ title from the society?
Maybe Trump could threaten to send Harry back to the UK?

Chaz will never do that. For one thing, I'm absolutely certain he loathes Trump. :)

Yes. His merry, witch-like dance with the Devil Incarnate -- and the DOGE appointment, has surely been the grain that has destabilized the heap of prior timidness on their part.

Like some historical figure dabbling in heresy and reckless moral depravity, that was excommunicated by the Church, no doubt Musk is fretting with deep despair over his impending exile.

Hahaha. As I tried to point out in post 29, this will be about preserving the reputation of the Royal Society, rather an attempt to punish Muskie.

He will no doubt dismiss the Society as a bunch of milquetoast libtards, infected by the woke mind virus. But they don’t all have kids who’ve changed gender and disowned them, eh, Elon?

He needs to be expelled, with some sort of British expulsion ceremony.
Like the opening of "branded "

It may bear heavy with such an honourable chap as he. The slow walk to the library with revolver in hand, even before the outcome of the meeting is known. What right fine stuff these rocket chaps are.

Musk's ears will be turning red tomorrow, 3rd March.
Royal Society meeting.
Will he get the rocket?
