Sciforums - Better Now Than Before

Actually, I kinda like the new look of sciforums, I'm not so distracted by the Avatars anymore. Signatures would be nice though. But no Avatars.

Also, I wouldn't mind the post count being put back on. Well, when this paying member thing comes alive, they'll be back

Does anyone know whether you could turn off the avatars when that starts?

You can always choose not to have one, but when the paying member thing starts, I don't think there is anything that will stop you from seeing mine. :D

Aww man :(

I'll be too distracted to post with all these purdy picitures.

Oh well, I'll survive. But an option to switch off all Avatars for a single user would be cool

LOL, Just found out there IS an option to turn off Avatars already :bugeye:

I was just thinking about this the
other day. Any more info on when
is it supposed to come alive?

I like not having avatars or signatures. It keeps everything much simpler and cleaner so we can focus on what is being said rather than be distracted by the cosmetic decorations.

I've also noted that there has recently been an influx of quality posting members. I hope the trend continues.

Of course, moving the function buttons and the date/time to the left would further significantly improve the site - Dave - hint hint.

I have to stop creating alternate profiles, I must have over two dozen by now, and I use all of them regularly!

this is a bad joke ;)

Like who? (Just so I know who to take as a role model :)) pm me if you don't want to give names publicly.

Judging by the number of replies to your post, it might be that the only person who is concerned with hierarchy is you. I certainly don't use number of posts to determine who is a credible poster - that is based strictly on content.
I could have 1000 posts for all anybody knows under another username.
Then you need only let people know what that user name was, and you would perhaps feel as though you were receiving the "respect" you so seem to need.

Just my .02.

Peace.

And a person with 1000 posts is going to think the person with 2000 posts is superior to me or has seniority over me.
But is this person really superior?

Are humans truly insecure creatures, always trying to get a leg up on the next by whatever means possible? I thought the folks on sciforums were less vain than you are suggesting.

Yes, post count is not an optimal measure of a person's contribution to the community (there can be no such measurement, since each member will have a different viewpoint). But it is a heuristic of some sort, and not a terrible one at that.

Perception becomes the reality. A mod with 4000 posts looks at me with 45 posts as a novice. somebody who hasn't paid his dues. An inaccurate assumption.

Inaccurate how? You will have probably been a member for a shorter period of time, read fewer discussions, contributed fewer ideas to fewer debates, interacted with fewer members, and have less of an idea of the general social structure in place and its history. Probably.

I could have 1000 posts for all anybody knows under another username. But out of boredom or monotony decided to change names. Why should I hang onto a name I'm sick of for the purpose of losing status or senority? Why should post count be so important?

I see. So that's it, eh? If you want to change your name, that's a trivial thing for me to do (just send me a message). But, if you're trying to change your identity, obviously you have to start from the beginning.

And, btw, multiple aliases is generally frowned upon and won't win you any respect from either myself or the community.

Well good. Now just convert that into a numerical algorithm I can use. Shall I propose a new ranking unit applied to all members, the 'fast-eddie' (so named in your honour)? fast-eddie, exhibiting pure 'fast-eddie'-ness, will sit atop the scale with a value of inifinite 'fast-eddie's.

no av's? nahh..

i spend hours workin on mine, its what i love to do... although they never look like there was that much time put into them becuase they are so small, but its a hobby of mine, and i miss getting to use them.

I wasn't around for the avatar days... I really like my avatar, and spend lots of time working on mine too. I would like to see avatars in the site, but then again, everyone is saying it was too visually distracting... I guess I'll have to trust you cause I never saw sciforums with avatars and sigs. Either way this site is a blessing (so to speak).
(I attached my avatar just cause I'm so proud, don't hate me!)

Sure I'd like to have my avatar displayed under my 'nick'
but what the hell, I've still got my 'nick'.

And what's this about no signature?

Take care
