For the record, I don't think a settlement on Mars is impossible. In fact I think we will have a manned mission there within 20 years, and will probably have some sort of base there within 50. Perhaps even some people will live there for years.

It's not that I think a domed community of the sort we are talking about is impossible. I just think we will choose to spend our money on other things.
