Our objective is to keep the lights on.

Those who would turn the lights off are our enemies. Those who would turn the lights off on others are our enemies. If our stupidity causes the weather to turn off the lights, then we are our own enemy.

Clarification?
Is "turning the lights off" a metaphor? Or are you literally meaning turning the lights off?
If the latter, why is it bad?

"The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time", British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey remarked to a friend on the eve of the United Kingdom's entry into the First World War.

It's a metaphor for the end of something. Civilization, industrial age, whatever.

In reply I would offer Samuel Clemens: "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."

The 'military' (it's a social group) of the Earth, should see that weapons are more money for the 1%. Every bullet fired is a bullet sold. Just bury the weapons. Don't use them, and don't buy any more. We would all be better off. Then we can think about being humanitarians. Two of the three leaders of the world are arms dealers. It's a thought.

If the USA stopped all weapon production for 6 months, I believe that they would be thrown into a cataclysmic depression. The 'defense' industry is a major part of the US economy - which is obscene IMO.

Certainly. And I'm sure the rest of the world would say "You know ... I'm OK with how much influence the US currently has all over the world while we have starving children. Let's just keep everything the way it is."

I read about the ancient battles.
Few would appreciate how many even pre JC.
Armies of 40,000 killing all the other side then all the city folk sometimes all the livestock.
War was how you got gold...not trade...well of course there was trade.
My point which is mere belief is we have yet to evolve to be peaceful beings.
Look even here folk will fight rather than be peaceful and respectful.
The message of Jesus falls mostly on deaf ears.
Ever wondered why we enjoy sport.
I suggest it goes in part to satisfy the desire for war.
