After several anti-vaxxers contracted serious COVID, and were hospitalized, one doctor recalls them begging for the vaccine. It broke her heart to have to tell them that it wouldn't help, and that they had to go on ventilators.

I strongly suspect this has to do with Ivermectin. Anti-vaxxers touted this dewormer as a miracle cure for COVID. And you could always get it. It was just prescribed for worms and not COVID.

I think it's a twisted version of the frontier spirit of self-reliance, elevated to a ridiculous degree. You might have a bit of the same in Australia, I imagine - I don't know. But there is in the US this strong current of libertarianism which deludes itself that people don't need each other, or to pay taxes towards common social goods, like roads, police, education etc. There is also this fantasy of the American Dream by which anyone can make it if they work hard. The flip side of this is that anyone who does not do OK must be morally defective, so it's their own fault and they don't deserve help from the more fortunate.

In Britain, due to centuries of the class system, land ownership etc, there are few such illusions. We all know, at some level, that being well off is a matter of birth and luck as much as ability, so those with more owe something to help those with less. OK we all moan like hell about taxes of course, but there is not quite the same pseudo-moral justification.
