You took the easy way out. You could have asked for donations much earlier. You could have explained your economics and how much you needed. All these things have happened, with success. See Blender. See Perl. See kuro5hin.
 
What's your problem, sir? The "easy" way out would be to shut sciforums down entirely. Don't tempt me with your ingratitude.
 
I've been trying to explain success stories. There's some common threads to them. Those that explain how much they need tend to get more--and this is in no way new information. It's been the same for faith healers, street musicians, whatever. You waited too long, and apparently got desperate enough to accept astrology/psychic ads on a "sciforums"?

You already have my money, and I'm glad enough that for some time it was operating on donations without ads.
 
psshh....Porfiry is doing a fabulous job managing this site. He has already put his own money and time into this, and is very responsive to the members on this board. I don't know what more you could ask from him!

He even spent more time getting the ads and making the deals.

I don't know how the ads could really bother you.

Blender and Perl are software projects, and have absolutely nothing to do with anything. kuro5hin was shut down for months (so long that I stopped visiting all-together, and have never returned to that site out of indifference). Your 'stories' aren't very relevant.

The advertisers were chosen by myself. And so far the advertisements have generated $0. What I choose to place on sciforums is my business.

I guess that Fen has also decided not to make any further "contributions" to magazines and newspapers, cable TV... those nasty nasty ads. Wasn't his money enough?
 
I'm only speaking for myself, but I'm sure a few others would feel the same. For me the forums is the second port of call after reading my email. As I see it, and from what I understand, this is Dave's own project, he's been financing it and running it for a long time now, and those of us who come here are enjoying the privilege of communicating with people from other countries and cultures, exchanging ideas and making friends - all at no cost to us. I don't know how he does it, and I don't know how much it costs to run, but I'm grateful that he is. I know he's been thanked many times for doing this, but that does not give anyone the right to criticize or dictate how things should be run. If Fen was a religious person and donated to the church, or even if he donates to charity, it does not give him the right to become part of the administration.

When I see someone being critical of anything to do with the forums it has the same effect of watching someone who's just been given a gift say to the giver "this isn't good enough" - you can't help but think 'what an ungrateful bastard'. Thats how I feel and that's why I'll speak up when Dave is attacked for the way the forums are run.

Just my opinion.

On another note, Fen, you're an ungrateful git. Stop being so petty and get over it.

Porfiry deserves to get money for this place, hell, I should start paying rent as I'm here most of the time (please, oh please don't charge me rent, I'm just a poor boy, nobody loves)

I'm the one who gave money. I gave a relatively insignificant amount (around $48), but I would have given more if I could see what was needed. I believe Porfiry is the one being ingrateful.

The entire point of a voluntary donation is that it is free of conditions and stipulations. Donating does not give you any more say in how the site is run. If it did, it would not be a 'donation'.

Am I talking about law here? Besides, in the real world, donaters influence things by witholding donations if things go wrong. I'm just advising you that I'm much less likely to donate with ads showing up (which apparently you don't pay for). Congradulations, you have a bunch of poor sycophants marching behind you and no money in your pocket.
