Natural Remedies

@ OP

I think many ppl is lead to belive that just becourse something is "Natural" its better and has less side effects but thats rarely the case. There is a reason why we dont just stick an opium poppy in to a patients mouth if they were in pain.....

I see patients at the place that i work, come in very sick from time to time, cuz they used "natural" medicines.... these having then affected how the medicine they allready take works......
the worst thing is the natural medicin producers aint accountable in the same way as fore instans a company like "novo-nordic" with their drugs.
Ppl are taking responsability for what they put in their mouths as soon as it says "natural" atleast in my contry its as such.

Several of these natural remidies that ppl can buy, can have long term side effects wich are dangerous... and these multiply if your taking regular drugg's from a pharmacy.
the list of problems ive seen ppl get from 'natural' remidies is very very long....

Natural remidies CAN be good, if used responsably and if your getting advice from a professional....

@ Spidergoat,
All anyone has to do is provide a single science proven based home/natural remedy to show you are wrong repeatedly throughout this thread.

We have shown many which just shows your comprehension skills are lacking or you are just being stubborn.

How does this elude you?

I understand some people refuse to lose an argument, but how can you keep a stance that natural remedies need to be in pseudoscience.

I have stated many, but will again name one I have said repeatedly (thanks for that).

a) Tilting your bed higher at the head is an effective treatment to aid Acid Reflux. It is both proven and recommended by Doctors. It is a science based Natural remedy. IT IS NOT PSEUDOSCIENCE. It is not medicine.

So why can you not admit you are wrong? Is Admitting you are wrong an issue with you?

I cannot imagine how anyone could remotely think they are correct in your stance. It defies logic. You use some lame excuse about a radio show being mentioned. That does not change the fact that Natural Remedies can be scientific AS SHOWN REPEATEDLY (reminder). We are listing them on Sciforums which is not the catch all of all things scientific as well.

IF: IF people post pseudoscience remedies like witchdoctors, voodoo, or whatnot then laugh at them or whatever, but as of now the only wrong posts are coming from you.

The dufus is strong with this one. Notice how you mentioned science? Yeah, that's the part that's missing when you don't know the true effect and effectiveness of some untested remedy. I'm not saying that something yet unknown to science can't be effective.

Inclining a bed or even standing up is a PROVEN SCIENTIFIC NATURAL REMEDY for ACID REFLUX. What can be more natural than standing up, and it is proven to reduce attacks and is recommended by doctors.

I think it is funny you refer to me as a "dufus" when you seem a little thick to grasp such a simple concept. I think I could explain this to a 5 year old and get a better level of comprehension. I am guessing 5 year old comprehension as my youngest is 8 and this would seem far too advanced for him.

Keep arguing your losing stance all you like. Throw insults if you cannot think of anything intelligent to say.

I don't mind.

I relish "debating" with people who know they are wrong but cannot admit it.

I apologize for the insult, but you persist with a basic misconception. All I want is for remedies to be verified as effective through rational scientific means. This is exactly how you describe your remedy for acid reflux. Remedies can be both natural and scientifically proven as effective, I have no problem with that. I do have a problem with people who reject the process of scientific verification entirely and maintain an almost religious worship of alternative (unproven) medicine as automatically superior.

Birthwort

Aristolochia (Birthwort) has been shown to be both a potent carcinogen and kidney toxin. Herbal compounds containing Aristolochia are classified as a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.[17] Epidemiological and laboratory studies have identified Aristolochia to be a dangerous kidney toxin; Aristolochia has been shown associated with more than 100 cases of kidney failure.[18] Furthermore, it appears as if contamination of grain with European Birthwort (A. clematitis) is a cause of Balkan nephropathy, a severe renal disease occurring in parts of southeast Europe.[19]

Despite the toxic properties of aristolochic acid, naturopaths claim that a decoction of birthwort stimulates the production and increases the activity of leukocytes (white blood cells), or that pipevines contain a disinfectant which assists in wound healing.

True but this should not be used to criticize the whole of the natural remedies

@ Spidergoat,
What's Naturopath?
@ spidergoat,
Just because you now realize there are scientific Natural Remedies does not mean you should buy into every witch doctor tomfoolery that exists. I'd advise you to consult a real doctor before you take any more of this Birthwort. Perhaps it does what you say, but it sounds sketchy to me.

I'd stick to what is known science and not participate in folk remedies. Perhaps you can start a thread in pseudoscience if you wish to elaborate on your fairy tale cures, and leave this thread for science. Voodoo, Witchcraft, Naturopath (whatever you call it), have no place on this thread.

And then kwhilborn perhaps we could continue with the op of this thread , which I would enjoy

Bay Leaf Balances blood sugar and retards weight gain; sedative; may help reduce high blood pressure

They forgot to mention:

Side effects of Bay
Contact your health care practitioner if you experience any of these possible side effects of bay.

•asthma
•skin irritation
Eating bay leaves without crushing them first may cause bowel perforation.
Interactions
Combining herbs with certain drugs may alter their action or produce unwanted side effects. Tell your health care practitioner about any prescription or nonprescription drugs you're taking, especially insulin.

Important points to remember
•Don't use bay if you're pregnant or breast-feeding.
•Don't consume essential oil from bay leaves because of the risk of allergic reaction and an asthma attack.
•Don't ingest whole, intact bay leaves. Because of their sharp, serrated edges, they can become lodged in the esophagus or intestine. Some people have had to have surgery to remove them.
What the research shows
Although bay leaf is a popular seasoning, scientists can't verify claims that it's effective in treating diabetes or any other disease.

I would say thats rather important information!

How many are into natural remedies

For myself I go for Natural means of keeping myself Healthy before I would go to pharmas

There is a program on coast to coast tonight on Natural Remedies, and you can listen for free

If interested go to the coast to coast website

Then go to stations , you'll get a map of the US , just pick your state , and you'll get a list of affiliated radio stations , international , just scroll a bit further down

Anyway thoughts otherwise
Im for whatever that works,
I believe that there exists a cure in nature for any disease,we just dont know them all yet,
One time when I was a kid I had a wart on the sole of my foot that got so painful I could barely walk,
this was back in Europe and the old wise naturalist told me to get a certain plant
(Vlastovicnik =chelidonium-majus-)and use the juice inside to rub on and let it dry.
Worked like a dream and the wart completely disappeared.
I dont trust doctors much and try to avoid them unless absolutely necesary, even though health care is free in my country.

Couple years ago I had prostate problems, prostitis and the doctor prescribed antibiotics did not improve my condition at all,
so I started searching the net for natural cure for this,
and found out that simple prostate massage helps to clear it,..ejaculation does not help at all unfortunately..lol,
,seems like prostate is one of those uninteligently designed glands that in our evolutionary procces lost its ability to drain itself, unlike female organs..
If you happen to have this ailment look up Prostate drainage...it really works.
took me over a year and half of doing this, plus eating plenty of vitamins C,Beta carotene,Saw palmeto etc,,and avoiding spicy foods and sugary drinks, and basicaly living and eating healthy foods, and now I can finnaly sit down without discomfort,
If I relied on a doctor to cure me he would no doubt recomend cutting it out,as they make more money on surgical procedures then feeding you vitamins or using natural remedies!!

Natural remedy for food poisoning/ not advanced.

Step 1: eat bad food

step 2: drink wine

step 3: feel sick

step 4: eat yogurt around the time you feel sick

step 5: ****

step 6: feel sick and eat something.

for all who wishes to pursue home remedies:
DO YOUR HOMEWORK ! !
read the medical literature, know what the symptoms are and what treats it.
know and understand the chemistry of the plants you are dealing with, some plants are deadly to humans.
if you are unwilling or unable to do the above then DO NOT pursue a home remedy.
this can not be overstressed, let the user beware.
