Grand Blanc, MI: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Ongoing coverage via CNN↱ tells us at least one person is dead and nine wounded after an assault against a church in Michigan. The shooter rammed a truck into the building, shot at people, and set the building on fire; authorities expect more victims will be found.

The yet-unnamed suspect is dead, but authorities are preparing a search warrant for his home in nearby Burton.

Social media reports include video from inside the church as the sanctuary evacuates, drone footage of the burning church, and photos of a white pickup truck with two American flags mounted in the back. Social media reports suggest an unexploded IED has been observed and possibly recovered. Confirmed details are sparse at this time.

Eagle Pass, TX: Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino

What we know so far:

San Antonio man was arrested in Wilson County following a shooting at an Eagle Pass casino that left two people dead and several others injured, the sheriff's office said.

Keryan Rashad Jones, 34, was arrested on two counts of capital murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office told KSAT 12.

The Eagle Pass Police Department said Jones was captured in Wilson County hours after the shooting, in coordination with multiple law enforcement agencies, according to a Facebook post.

A weapon has been recovered; the tribe intends to extradite and try the subject under their jurisdiction, and we don't have word, yet, on a motive.

Southport, NC: American Fish Company

This was the shooting that made me think of starting this thread: Three slain and at least five injured at a waterfront bar and grill after a gunman opened fire from a boat.

The Southport Police Department arrested and charged a man in connection with Saturday night's deadly mass shooting at a waterfront bar in Southport.

According to Southport Police Chief Todd Coring, officers arrested Nigel Edge for the deadly shooting at American Fish Company that killed three people and injured at least five others.

Court documents state that Edge is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder and five counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Arrest warrants allege that Edge used a short-barreled AR rifle fitted with a suppressor, folding stock, and scope to shoot from his boat ....

.... Coring said that Edge was detained shortly after 10 p.m. by the Coast Guard while he was loading his boat at the public boat ramp at NE 55th Street in Oak Island.

"We believe this was a targeted location," Coring said. "He acted as a lone wolf. He acted alone. This is highly premeditated from what we're seeing at this time and we feel that there are no other threats to our community."

We do have some insight into the suspect, Nigel Max Edge; the order dismissing his lawsuit↱ against the United States and a long list of people, including his parents, will tell you approximately what you need to know about his state of mind.

Another for the 28th September:

Only one dead, but 3 others injured, so probably qualifies as "mass shooting" (is there an actual recognised definition??)

Seems like a fair percentage of these shootings over the years involve a shooter who is ex-military. The LDS church shooter in Michigan was an ex-Marine. Upbringing, neurological issues and toxic culture can all mess a person up, but there's nothing like military service to really f--- you up. I notice this church burner rode in under two American flags. Because one flag isn't enough, when you're really truly a patriot!

It's funny, I've known people who emerged from service wiser, disillusioned and far less enamored of warfare as an instrument of foreign policy...or traumatized and paranoid and closer to snapping. I suspect the latter were more fragile to begin with, and something of their humanity buckled under the pressures.

In the United States, supporting the troops is largely a slogan. They say Veterans Administration care is excellent if you can get it, but that catastrophe is a result of constantly bargaining, "sausage grinding" , in legislation; the care standard is great, the bureaucracy is a calculated and inflicted shambles.

A lot of people who weren't so fragile and would have emerged wiser, less enamored, &c., were left to suffer with injuries and illnesses resulting from service. When the phrase, "going postal" emerged, we were also talking about the number of veterans working in the postal service. Over the thirty years since, we've only gotten worse at taking care of our veterans.

That kind of stuff really grinds people down. And I can't even begin to say what it looks like to the patriotic sons and daughters of patriots so easily scorned for the simple fact of their service.

A statistic: so far this year, there have been more than 330 mass shootings in the United States.

Montgomery, Alabama: Downtown (Bibb & Commerce)

Two dead, twelve injured, per Associated Press↱:

Police were called around 11:30 p.m. to what Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys described as a "mass shooting" that broke out near the Hank Williams Museum, the Rosa Parks Museum and the Alabama Statehouse, within earshot of officers on routine patrol in downtown Montgomery.

The shooting began when someone targeted one of the 14 victims, prompting multiple people to pull their own weapons and start firing back, Graboys said.

"This was two parties involved that were basically shooting at each other in the middle of a crowd," Graboys said.

Statistically, it was a strange reprieve; there was a mass shooting on 1 October, but that was the first recorded after the Eagle Pass↑ shooting. And then we made it three days before logging four mass shootings:

• Saginaw, Michigan: 1 dead, 3 injured
• Montgomery, Alabama: 2 dead, 12 injured
• Mobile, Alabama: 1 dead, 4 injured
• Angleton, Texas: 2 dead, 2 injured

Meanwhile, in Montgomery, it is unclear if any of the bystanders packing heat managed to do any good with their guns.

The Value of a Gun

Leland, Mississippi
Another 4 dead and 12 others injured (4 critical).

The Mississippi Free Press reports on a terrible night in the Magnolia State. In addition to the Leland mass shooting that killed four and injured twelve, two more died in a shooting at nearby Heidelberg, while a third shooting occurred at Rolling Fork reports no casualties.

The Leland shooting took place in town, as people celebrated the local high school homecoming event. The Heidelberg shooting occurred on the grounds of Heidelberg high school, and the Rolling Fork gunfire occurred at South Delta High School.

For American students, Homecoming is the first major celebration in the school year; for most Americans, Leland is only known as the birthplace of our most beloved saint, Kermit the Frog.

The thing is, there are so many shootings, it's hard to account for the dead. The weight of it all is too much for the living to carry forward. And so these symbols of our outrage: Our Kermit, dearest Kermit, weeps terribly for his hometown; and our Friday Night Lights are stained with blood. A quarter of a millennium feels like a long time, but we're a young empire still building our traditions, and look at these things we build. Homecoming is a silly and superficial ritual, but has the potential to become a true celebration of history and heritage; in Leland, each year, they will pray for the dead, and remember what murder is.

The kids are alright ... still. They bounce when they land, it's kind of amazing to see. But we really are asking way too much of them. What kind of future are we building, where every celebration of anything begins with a moment of silence the murdered? What values will we ask them to teach their children?

And another on an island off S Carolina, a Gullah community. US Rep. Nancy Mace went all upper case to let everyone know she was COMPLETELY HEARTBROKEN. Mace, who has frequently tried to position herself as a compassionate conservative, has sort of shucked off that sheep's clothing in favor of full MAGA wolf in the past year, now going after the LGBT community regularly, including charges of couples grooming children. So I am a bit surprised at the professed delicacy of her heart in this current tragedy, given all the MAGA hardening it's had in the past year. I hope this cardio-breakage can last until there's a bill on the House floor for stricter gun control.

If she's still the animal rights champion she was in past years, maybe she will care to soothe the weeping Kermit the Frog (referenced in Tiassa clip, above).

This one was averted due to would-be shooter streaming that he was going to go shoot up the airport.

Atlanta police will work with federal authorities to determine how he obtained the gun, “which he was not able to legally possess”, Schierbaum said.

You think it might have something to do with him living in the United States? Everyone officially clutching their pearls that someone might have illegally obtained a gun....getting really old. We would have to radically change our entire enforcement and tracing system from top to bottom to even begin to put a dent in the weapons black market.

You want to slow down illegal gun sales.
Sell an illegal gun? Die!
Traffic in illegal guns? Die!
Use an illegal gun in other than self-defense? Die!

This is an example of why people don't take you seriously.
And that's an example of how you will never solve your problems because you are afraid of the solutions that can help. Afraid of being called callous and unfeeling. How about really feeling for those hurt by illegal guns.

It makes no sense to respond to crime by calling off the rule of law.

And, really, stop with the bloodlust; it's dumb enough as it is, but your insincerity just makes your advocacy of murder all the more grotesque.
