What is ESRD?
ESRD is when the kidneys stop working well enough for you to live without dialysis or a transplant. This kind of kidney failure is permanent. It cannot be fixed. Most cases of ESRD are caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. Some problems you are born with, some reactions to medicines, and some injuries can also cause ESRD. If you have ESRD, you will need dialysis or a kidney transplant to live.

University of Miami researchers have found that FGF23 could help predict whether a patient with early stages of kidney disease is at risk of progressing to and dying from ESRD. However, other researchers are not yet convinced the biomarker will alter treatment decisions.

Knowing whether or not you might have kidney problems before they happen could be very helpful to everyone. This research that the U of M is doing seems to have found a way to see the problem before it happens which is a major breakthrough with kidney research.
