This year ,as I said Norris didn't figure but there was some well known writer in his place(Colm Tobin?) explaining that ,to understand Ulysses you have you have to read it as a series of vignettes rather than as a whole(rather like the Odyssey)

Talking of fantaisists,we had a visitor some years back who ,off his drugs imagined that I had lived in a castle in England and that he was related to Countess Markievicz of the 1916 uprising.

He presented me with a book on WB Yeats "Greek and Roman Themes" which ,because I can't be bothered to remove it lies prominently but unread in my living room.

No one has noticed it though and I have to remind myself from time to time it is still in place.

It is a scolarly work ,but of no interest to me.

Actually his brother,the vet was abused by his father and committed suicide (his father, the pharmacist used to walk around town talking to himself )

I have only read Portrait of the Artist. And I know little of Yeats, save that he had a thing about “gyres”, which I learnt from a brother who was reading English. Turning and turning in the widening gyre etc.

Also a Protestant in the "Catholic" South.And an eccentric by nature I would say.

He got bad press because he invoked the Greek custom in antiquity of sex with young boys and distinguishing paedophilia from ephebophilia.

Few were impressed -perhaps why he pulled out of the Presidential race (memory not so good)

You're a kid! This isn't a put down it's just a fact and a nice one. Most on here have their best years of work, love, athleticism and health behind them, your years are all ahead of you.

Long ago I had a recurring dream:
To wit:
I was moving between 2 placid pools
and I thought to disturb one to watch the ripples, so, I threw a pebble into the pool
and
nothing happened
so, I got a rock and tossed that in
and
nothing happened
the rock just disappeared beneath the surface while not disturbing the surface of the placid pool
gee darn
I was on a roll
so, i got a bigger rock and threw it into the placid pool
and
nothing happened
so I found a boulder as big and heavy as I could manage, and flung it into the placid pool
and
nothing happened
hmm
while pondering this seeming wrong event
I accidentally kicked the tiniest pebble into the other pool
and
the ripples spread to the opposite shores and rebounded stronger and the resultant wave heights grew stronger and higher
and again rebounds and the waves grew stronger and higher and this proceeded until the waves were so strong and high that they shattered this pool
and I thought(after several repeats of this dream) that the dream was about love, and the effects that one person could have on another(or lack of effect)
and with that thought
I quit having that dream.

Many people claim to be, or they think they are, or are told they are. There is no marker for ND, it is a constellation of behaviours that, independently, may be quite normal but cumulatively may rise to the level of diagnostic.

You should get tested.

All the the nomenclature of mental illness/status, how they classify it, grade it, name it, treat has changed again and again.

What will it be in 20 years? Will N.D. be a thing? Lectures on this in the 1980s split mental status into, normal, neurosis and psychosis.
Neurosis being described as "quirks," "habits," "eccentricity."
Hypochondriac was given as an example, OCD possibly although that term may not have been used.
Psychosis requiring clinical intervention, psychiatric evaluation, treatment plan, drugs, hospitalisation.
Schizophrenia for e.g. "affected disorder" or depression.
Also Manic depression, hyper mania which is now bipolar disorder.
Being 40 years out of touch, I am not sure where all those conditions sit now these days.
 
This whole thread reminds me of:
(Yeah, a bit of a different perspective but, heck, any excuse for some Minchin ;))

Haha. Yes. Always better to explore therapeutic options with sentient chipmunks than plastic-swaddled Danish Eurodance groups.
