Beyoncé conceived Cowboy Carter as a journey through a reinvention of Americana, spotlighting the overlooked contributions of Black pioneers to American musical and cultural history.

Are the songs newly written, or from the wealth of Black music and instrument playing styles in the 19th-century and early or first-half of the 20th that actually did contribute to country, folk, gospel, and Western music?

One of several(?) that Led Zeppelin did a cover for, ripped-off, re-invented, etc. (Whatever descriptive language one wants to use for white lads belatedly making money off of old shellac era recordings.)

"Cowboy Carter [...] aided an ambitious reimagining of Americana and country through the lens of its Black roots. The album also ignited discussions on Black musicians' place within country music..."

I still can't make much out as to what any of those sections is doing with respect to "roots" until the one below. Which features some actual Black musician contributions from the deeper past. At age 90, Willie could certainly remember the tail-end of it, though it's unclear what his role was or that he selected anything at all. (Sole clue provided: "Willie Nelson acting as a disc jockey.").

It's not a problem. I didn't know what to expect.

This just sounded to me like a lot of money was put into a project that somehow missed the mark - whatever it was supposed to be.

I hope she reads this forum... cause honest criticism like that can only help her to do better nest time :)

Yeah, she could use our advice... :rolleye:

As evidenced by the note below, which I had intended to point out, my opinion is apparently by far in the minority. I don't really care for anything Beyoncé's produced, though - except maybe that kooky duet with Lady Gaga about something to do with a telephone - so it'd have been a pretty tough sell to make a fan of me with this effort. I'm more into "Olde Tyme whiskey sippin'" country tunes. Probably means I'm in some way a racist, but whatever.

Or this one that actually dates back to 1975, long before Johnny Cash covered it in 1987. Unlike Leon, I'm not sure Guy Clark ever appeared on SNL during the seventies. All of these Travis picking and Chet Atkins alternating bass fingerpicking styles that simulataneously play a melody or melody-like riffs on the treble strings -- that Tommy Emmanuel continues the tradition of -- are descended from (Black) Delta Blues and Country Blues guitarists of the early 20th-century.
