"Live" UK bands, pubs and clubs.

It is great that some UK pubs still have regular band nights, I went to a pub in Manchester yesterday.
Not a good experience, the reason? Backing tracks. When is a live band more like karaoke than an actual band?
So the band I heard sound checking had a wonderful mix, great sound, harmonies almost too good to be true.
It was, I jumped out of my seat and went round the corner o the pub to get a look.
What I heard, main vocal with harmony, at least two voices, perhaps two guitars, bass keys and drums.
What I saw, three guys, vocals, bass and drums and a shit tonne of PA/desk kit.

I spoke to the drummer, he had an expensive DM, they seem to be the "in" kit with Mapex. Why get that top notch gear then play to a backing track?

When bands or whatever musical celebrities need additional voices for studio recordings, more and more are using cheap AI generation instead of hiring expensive human singers. I suppose AI is surely invading this live territory, too, though maybe most of the tracks are still created the old-fashioned way for now. All entertainment sectors will probably consist of their own versions of kayfabe someday.

We had a keyboard player with amazing stuff including Moog, we needed it for the intro of "Mr Crowley."
He left, so we used a sample for that intro but anything else was just ditched.
A shame because they were cool tracks.
We tell the crowd first if we do it like that.
We are looking for a new guy atm.

He needs the work to pay for that top notch gear.
Drums sounded processed, not sure if there was a track there too. I was a little bit vocal about it because people pay for tickets. No one engaged with me though so I ranted to myself and staff. They probably thought I was an ass.

I used to play with a guy, excellent drummer and vocalist, who would do solo shows of just him on guitar and backing tracks. Said he supported himself for a couple of years doing the solo thing on cruise ships. My wife says that he still posts his gigs on facebook every week.

I also recall that he was a major control freak. But he does put on a decent show, in a background music while people drink and talk sort of way.
