Is Positive Discrimination necessary?

I live in a city that is 30% black. I work with and enjoy the company of black people everyday.

My point is that , as a group, blacks are a net drain on society. That is not to say that every black person is but that as a group they are.

Where blacks run businesses the businesses they run are derivative providing services or retail trade and usually only succeed where politics and or minority 'set asides' make it impossible to fail, i.e. they do not have to compete with other business.

If someone could point me to a black run engineering, manufacturing, pharmaceutical or any other major enterprise listed on a major stock exchange I would appreciate it. I maintain they do not exist.

Remember there are almost 40 million blacks in the US. Yet tiny Ireland has more major enterprises operating in America than all of America's blacks have created which is none. The US has an Indian Hindu community of a million or so and they are of recent origin but they are wealthy and account for a large percentage of our IT and computer industry start up companies. In the UK the situatio is better. We are far less ghettoised than the USA..less gated communities and an altigther fairer systen..esp. re Health. To my mind the USA has a lot to learn...as spelt out in Michael Moores latest film.

This is the problem and I take no joy in pointing it out. Mobile phones, computers, biotech, IT are all new industries open to anyone smart enough to understand the technology and with the drive to found an enterprise yet blacks are totally absent from these fields except as non critical employees. I want to see
a black Larry Ellison ( Oracle) Gordon Moore ( Intel) Bill Gates ( Microsoft) or even some black entreprenuer building a Walmart
or Tesco. But I don't. Why?

No, its discrimination just as well.
I guess people are scared of being accused of discriminating or being racist.

What is discrimination in what he posted? I don't understand.

Are you saying that because blacks can't get businesses going, it's due to discrimination? And if that's so, then when white businesses fail, is that also due to discrimination? From the original post, I don't see where you're making the accusation of discrimination ....and who is discriminating?

My answer to this question: "No, its discrimination just as well."
Something i said as a reaction to the OP: "I guess people are scared of being accused of discriminating or being racist."

Now, where did i accuse anyone of racism ??
Or that blacks cant get businesses going ?
And where did i say... oh forget it ! Learn to read !

I thought there were more white people on welfare and medicare than blacks? That isn't true?

Well, sure, in a matter of just numbers! But blacks make up only about 12% of the US population, yet blacks on welfare and government assistance makes up a much, much, much larger percentage than white.

how much more?

Much, much more! :D

Sorry, but I don't have those numbers, but it's pretty easy to look up ...I think? I do know, however, that those kind of figures are now being culled from the Internet due to blacks complaining that it makes them look bad!! ...LOL!

Billy you just seem to see what you want to see. In fact blacks are integral members of corporate culture and have been for a long time.

explain who's discrimating towards who? and why do you think they belive they're being descriminated against?

Not since welfare reform. Now there are more blacks on welfare than whites. And that's absolute numbers. If you want to talk about per capita, no contest.

i dont understand because black people say all the time, "the white man has kept us down",

samuel L Jackson = black actor who is the biggest gross income ever!!

Tiger Woods = golfer, who is the biggest sports person!!

He's talking about entrepenoirs. The one who founded the business, not just middle management types who may have gotten their jobs based upon affirmative action, but some black guy founding a company.

On that note, wasn't Famous Amos Cookies founded by a black guy?

Notice those are both entertainers. Black culture seems to undervalue scholastic achievement which limits their ablity to succeed in many areas. Doing well in school is "acting white". Doing well in sports or acting is fine, so they excel in those areas.

If it's traded on a stock exchange, then anyone can buy it. Since whites buyt most stock, what are you looking for here? Have you ever heard of Richard Parsons (CEO of Time Warner)? If only tech companies count, how about John W. Thompson of Symantec? (Looks black to me.) Apparently, it has to be somebody you've read about personally...but that you have such a cramped understanding of American business is your problem, not a social phenomenon.

Most businesses run by men also fail (at a phenomenal rate compared to those founded by women) perhaps we should have a thread bashing men next.

What about Marc Hannah, co-founder of Silicon Graphics? (3 billion in sales last year)

The new millionaires: emerging generation of supersuccessful African-Americans redefine wealth

I'm not surprised such a distorted view of minorities exists in America given such reprehensible examples of racism as this:

What about all those corporations run by whites that dodge taxes by "relocating" their companies to a Cayman Islands mailbox, effectively stealing the people's money - a drain on society.

Lets look back just 50 years ago. The blacks couldn't get an education for they weren't allowed into white schools. They weren't allowed to get decent jobs but were forced to only work those jobs that "whitey" didn't want to do. All the businesses were run by whites and were keeping the blacks out from making any great amount of money.

What a great way to treat others in a country built on immigration. Nowadays things are getting a little better for them but they have to catch up with over 200 years of lack of education that the white society forced on them. It is going to take awhile in order for them to really catch up, but some of them are trying their best to compete in a still white society. Instead of trying to show us why the blacks are doing so poorly why don't you show us how whites are trying to help them.
