I recommend you start with the number of attacks, the funding for the VHP, their % support in the Hindu population, and how many people they've actually killed.

They have worldwide support among Hindu fundamentalists including a branch in the United States and receive their funding mostly from Hindu Americans.
They are the militant wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party which has had two terms as the goevrnment, run the RSS and Bajrang Dal which are youth military and religious training organisations and have also started a women's armed wing, but I forget the name.
The RSS if you remember, is the group to which Godse belonged, who shot Gandhi. They have deep roots in Indian society, but fortunately most Indians are not fundamentalists and NRIs are not permitted to vote.

The VHP, bas as they are, don't strike me as the type to initiate violence; rather, they seem to be one of those genuine offshoots of violence caused by fundamentalists of a different sort in India and their western frontier. I would say this falls a bit astride the point.

Lal is the historian of the BJP, he wrote a lot of revised history and changed a lot of textbooks while they were in power, they were all changed back after.
Gautier is the BJP reporter in India.
And the VHP are absolute terrorists. They whitewashed themselves considerably and made themselves a packet while the BJP were in power, but all that was used to fund their youth military wings and make international bases. Don't be fooled by the political facade. They are the Taliban behind the Mujahideen.
