"I like all types of music, except country"

Why does everyone say that? What's so unpalatable about country music? I think it's especially easy to listen to. Not arse-rattlingly good, but that's just it, it's "pleasant". I don't see how "you either love it or hate it" applies to country music, I feel like everyone should just kind of think it's ok, but it must be the number one kind of music that lovers of "all music" agree sucks, and also the number one kind of music where the fans think everything else sucks.
Not me, I like country, I love Merle Haggard, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Parton, etc. Sad songs about spouses that drink too much and cheat on you, sung pleasantly over slide guitar, it's great, I can't relate, but I love the imagery.
What's to hate?

It fills a niche I would predict is suitable for death metal or intense techno, with hardcore fans and staunch opposers, but really it's just easy listening, it's anything but extreme in any direction.

But fun played backwards( I found my dog, I found my wife, I found my farm)
 
If you want extreme country, you have to go back to Bluegrass. Some of these cats are fucking unbelievable.Breakneck speed.
What's more is that they can rap off those lightning fast runs in your kitchen with an old box or fiddle with ZERO electricity.
Do yourselves a favor and check out Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Vasser Clemens, Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas just to name a few.


Edit: I hate top 40 country/pop. To me it's 80's rock with "twang".
 
Thething I most admire about country music is the composers' skill in getting all the songs to sound the same.

Hehehe I tend to agree, although I like Johnny Cash, i'm not entirely sure he's country, I thought he was soft rock?

How about that being the very reason why?
If it doesn't induce feelings one way or the other then it's ignorable.
Why bother with it, if it has no emotional effect upon the listener, causes "apathy".

Who do you mean by everyone? in which area? :shrug:

Is Shania Twain's music a country music? I like it.
 
Shania Twain is country music turned "chick (pseudo)rock".
How many guys like the music (as opposed to just watching the videos)?
 
Country is the new rock and roll according to a friend of mine in the music biz. I suspect the other music is more "Wanna feek". Than country. So country gets a bad rap.
 
"Proper" country (Johhny Cash, Waylon Jennings etc) is excellent but all that pop stuff (such as Shania) is a travesty (no offence to fans). In the same way most people on this board hate Hip hop because all they hear is the top 40 stuff, most people hate Country because all they hear is the likes of Garth Brooks & such.
 
Well Country has actually really branched out. I personally am disgusted with the cookie cutter clean Nashville cowboys(er fake cowboys) with the always fake croonin sound. There are some pretty good (realish) country artists like Hank III and Corb Lund.

But I LOVE Bluegrass, I have to admit that shit speaks to some kind of pre-programmed honky DNA or something. Doesn't even need a song, just that A MIGHTY GOOD A HUNTIN AND A PECKIN.

I just keep wishing for old time Minstrel and Bard music to come back...until then I keep playing the same old Jethro Tull songs every night.
