Yes scans show a loss of brain mass over time with some degenerative disorders and also loss of electrical activity with CVA, cancer, brain injuries.
You damage the neurons you damage the brain activity. Critical care units can keep you alive to a point following a severe stroke or brain trauma. The management team with assess if there are key areas of the brain that are damaged or simply died due to O2 shortage.
A patient can learn to rewire,use different parts of the brain, walk and talk again.
If too much has been damaged then you will die without the machines keeping you alive. The personality, awareness, memory, cognition all gone.
Sometimes the decision is to switch off the machine and let the patient pass.

So Olga, there is nothing special about thoughts, thinking, memory or personality. It is all embedded in our neurons, neuronal pathways, our brain which is an organ, a biological entity nothing more.
Is that all of our consciousness? The fact you can dismantle it piece by piece, in a biologically/medically predictable way suggests that is all it is.

I am talking specifically about the driver, the brain of that driver. A lot is in known about the brain, brain function, disease and brain injury.
Medicine has got to the point where some conditions can be managed or even cured.

With the brain? Not the serious stuff. Debilitating mental illness, degenerative disorders or cancer.

Aye, I am always interested in cures, I can't think of any off the top of my head, but it's not my speciality, I've just experienced it.

Brain injuries as I said before can be fixed to a point, also some infectious diseases like meningitis.
Of the all the diseases relating to mental illness I cannot think of one cure, treatment yes, cure no.
Depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bi polar, ADD, addiction conditions, autism, no cure.
Mind you there are lots of conditions for which there is no cure, just treatment/management only.

Though there are mental illnesses "due to other medical condition" which are cured when the physical illness is successfully treated. Examples include thyroid problems (depression, anxiety, impulsivity disorders), coeliac (mental fog, depression, anxiety), kidney disease (depression), lupus (hallucinations, delusions), temporal lobe epilepsy (hallucinations), encephalitis (various forms of psychosis), and that classic example: B12 deficiency. These are all treatable conditions where the mental illness will conclude decisively when treatment is successful. The treatment may be ongoing (e.g. getting B12 shots, or dialysis, or gluten free diet, or thyroid supplements...) but the mental symptoms are eliminated. And in some cases, one round of treatment fixes both physical and mental illness, e.g. encephalitis.

You mean Korsakoff's disease. But the memory problem is also related to a wider area of brain pathology including the diencephalon.
