How is the sequence of thougths arranged in the mind?

Why is the flow of thoughts not chaotic?
What makes you think it's not?

Do you mean why is not wholly chaotic?

Surely it is not a binary state. Order versus chaos in thought can be, among other ways, simply identified as the ability to concentrate. Ctha tgis something we evolved. (Most of us, that is. ADHD people have trouble with distractions.)

It's hard to tell where your skepticism lies.

In post 1, you ask why our thoughts are ordered and not chaotic. That's a bit ambiguous.

In post 2, I asked what you mean by chaotic thoughts. Sometimes our thoughts are chaotic. Sometimes we call this 'unable to concentrate'. I also explained that an inability to organize one's thoughts would by a pretty big survival disadvantage.

So, a very simple answer to your question is: it evolved as a survival trait, from a time when we were flatworms. If a flatworm startled every time a grain of silt rolled over it, it would soon die wasting energy, so it evolved to ignore distractions and concentrate on eating or breeding or whatever.

In post 3, you explain what order is, in your own words. I don't know why.

I think it would probably be better if you just explained your thinking up-front rather than readers having to guess what you mean from an eight word post.

Dave, incoherent, "rambling thoughts" are what we usually call "delusions." They are a sign of illness.
Well, that's a bit extreme though. There's a range of healthy organizational thinking: day-dreaming, stream-of consciousness, etc.

I am interested in the mechanism of thought itself. How neurons fire in such a way that it becomes a coherent, logical, and cause-and-effect stream of thoughts, rather than just a rambling stream of words.
How would such a chaotic mind possibly have evolved? Any complex creature who couldn't form a thought would have been eaten.

The wonderful world of Evolution Olga

Yes, Pin. Only now we can control our own evolution.
Er... Sure?

I mean, I suppose we could en mass choose mates who have difficulty concentrating or suffer from schizophrenia, keeping it up for generations, until a large population of the human race were unable to function, but they'd probably die out because of that.

Other than that, what does controlling our evolution have to do with the topic?

That's why the incompatibilism version of free will shouldn't even be desirable. Even setting aside the issue of survival, who wants to choose and behave randomly all the time? Even the severely mentally ill person probably wouldn't desire their elevated degree of "freedom" from governing constraints and personal tendencies if they could step outside themselves for a few moments and apprehend what they were like from a more regulated and deterministic perspective.

Дэйв, даже если у кого то проблемы с концентрацией внимания, это не означает автоматически, что у него бессвязный поток мыслей.

Sometimes you have to give up order to gain a higher order.

Dave, just because someone has trouble concentrating doesn't automatically mean they have a disjointed stream of thoughts.
That comes down to how one chooses to define it. It seems what you mean by disjointed isn't what I mean by disjointed.

At eight words, your opening post left a LOT to interpretation, so I interpreted it.

We're nineteen posts in, and you're still defining the question you were trying to ask. Why not just start with being forward about what your expectations are?
